Tattoo vs Running

I'd like to get a forearm tattoo but I'm seeing conflicting advice about the need to stop physical exercise. I'd rather not have stop running (hoping to do DCM).

Anybody have any thoughts as to whether running adversely affects a new arm tat? I'd imagine cling film on my arm on a 2 or 3 hour LSR would make things sweaty.

This would be a first tattoo for me so I'm wondering if I should hold off on the tattoo until I can take a couple of weeks off running

    Thanks

I wouldn't risk running for a day or two after getting the tattoo done, if it does start running or gets infected it could be very messy. I'd say after that though the tattoo crowd are just covering their backs so that in the event of a mishap they're in the clear.

Have you googled any forums with similar questions at all?

I hope your tattoo is something special if you're getting it done somewhere so obvious. No stars or scribbles I hope :)

Sounds like the prefect gift/reward to yourself for October 31st.

You won't need to take a couple of weeks off. A few days at most just until the rawness is gone then it will be fine.

It will be fine.It shouldn't interfere with your training at all...its not like you are doing a full contact sport.

If you've any concerns keep it covered with light gauze...not cling film as some places advise.

Ive been getting tattooed for years and im not big fan of clingfilm for covering tattoos as I personally find the whole "greenhouse" effect ie heat and a plastic enclosure is a breeding ground for an infection.
The gauze lets it breathe while protecting it while it heals.

    Hope this helps.

I got a half sleeve done a couple of years ago and went out running the day after each sitting and the tattoo wasn't affected at all. You only have the cling film on your arm for a few hours after you get the tattoo. Getting it on your forearm you don't have to worry about the tattoo rubbing off of anything so you'll be grand!
You should arrange to get it done the day after your LSR.

As long as you don't get it on the sole of your foot you should be grand.

...except polio and various other disease, that may not kill you (if you're lucky) but will not make you stronger :pac:

Was thinking of having that phrase that Alberto Salazar uses on my forearm. It has different layers of meaning :D

while I read that running or cycling won't affect the tattoo from bunch of people when I was doing my latest one (in the middle of the tri season) I found a few negative stories so decided that it's better to hold off. If you could wait XY years until this first one I don't see why this wouldn't indeed be a nice gift for yourself after the marathon after which you have an excuse for 7-14 off days :)

or how about buying a nice momento and sticking it on the wall, tattoos are so common now that people almost look unique without them.

hi i have been getting a complete sleeve been done the last couple of months. and ill give you my experience, it wont get infected, as long as you dont expose it to direct sunlight, and clean and cream it before and after you run . remember its your sweat so its what the body is used too. but the main thing i found is i got mine done every 4th Saturday it was a 6 hour session, but the Sunday was always a long run 10 mile. i was always absolutely wreaked. this like my body used so much energy repairing my arm that i had Notting for the run. so i suggest you do a small run the day after. dont worry get the tattoo.
