    Hi All,

Anyone get a taste of the new batch of 4K ULTRA Blu-Rays?

I've a Sony 55" 4K set and I'd be interested if the quality is superior visually to standard Blu-Ray.

    Thanks!

Depends if your 4K TV supports HDR. It's the HDR that makes the biggest difference with 4K visually.

I dont see it in spec - Here's mine:

EDIT: Although it does say this: Image Quality: Ultra HD

    It's compatible: http://www.sony.ie/electronics/televisions/x8500c-series

I would have thought that all 4K TV's would be HDR compatible. Otherwise it's not true 4k capabilities.

Have you got a 4K HDR Bluray player?

As I don't think you will see much unless you do...

If you don't, you could hold off for the new Xbox One due in August, supports 4K HDR Bluray...

    No standard blu ray player...

Will the PS4K also support HDR I wonder? - I'm a PS player...

Your TV must have a 10 bit panel to show the full colour gamut of HDR. My Panasonic is due to support HDR in a future upgrade but as it has an 8 bit panel it's not going to be as good as a full 10 bit. Doesn't bother me tbh. I picked it because it has amazing blacks and superb upscaling. And was on sale. My advice is to just enjoy the picture you have and not to stress over it.

I'm a bit disappointed my Sony does not have this feature. Was told in Harvey Norman it ticks all the boxes.. What do you think of the spec? Link in first post

Id be 99% certain the Neo will support both also...

I think that's due out around October, assuming they haven't gone back to the drawing board after Xbox Project Scorpio reveal...

Richersounds says its HDR ready: http://m.richersounds.com/#!/product/sony-kd55x8509cbu

Edit: sorry. It's 10biy driving of an 8bit panel like my Panasonic. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Thanks! Its all a bit confusing, if I've a standard Blu Ray player, will I get see the higher resolution of a Ultra Blu Ray on my TV then or do I need to upgrade the player?!

    Upgrade the player unfortunately... :(

Wait for the Neo would be my advice...

If you can hold out... :)

I dunno. In some of those comparisons the 4K looks like a completely different master/encode. This what happened with Blu-ray. They totally changed the colours and scrubbed away all the grain and were like "see, it's totally different!" :D

I've bought/upgraded the same movies for for 30 years - VHS, VCD, DVD, Blu Ray. I think Blu Ray has achieved a quality comparable to cinema, so UHD is not enough of an upgrade to warrant the spend IMHO.

It seems UHD has been ushered in following the failure of home 3D as 'the next big thing'.

I've seen 4K running on Netflix and yes its nice, but it doesn't make me feel my Blu Ray collection is now obsolete the way DVDs did to VHS.

You reach a "point" where you understand that the next bit of tech is relatively "pointless".

For many that was DVD. The majority of the buying public are still very happy with buying DVDs as without a side-by-side comparison with a Blu, they don't notice what they're "missing". The same thing applies to this 4K stuff, which many are calling silly.

I honestly cannot see too many people rushing to this 4K malarkey. And those that do will be in one of two categories. They will either be A. **** who simply want the new tech as some sort pissing contest, or B. People who genuinely want the tech and have researched it enough to think they know why.

The rest will "make do" with their DVDs or Blu's for quite some time yet, because 4K will be of little to no benefit to them.

Never trust the salesperson. They are not tech experts and just want the sale

C: are due new systems anyway and may as well adopt latest tech

C will follow in time and I s'pose we'll all be C's in the future.

But, I'm primarily talking about the folk who'll be buying this stuff over the next 6 months, when they don't really have to.

    This

I'd imagine its the reason the vast majority end up with newer tech. My sister needed to buy a TV over the weekend and just wanted a simple no frills display around ~40". Didn't care about the whole 'smart TV' but seems impossible to not get one now and about 90% of the ones in the shop were 4K. Its not that its a bad thing just shows how as time moves on everything filters down.

Expect 3D, that's dead, thank god!

    Actually you can! http://www.discovery.com/tv-shows/mythbusters/videos/polishing-a-turd-minimyth/

To be fair you need a very large screen or be sitting very close to it to notice the difference with 4k

Are there any shops around that have a good setup that shows off 4K blu-ray (actual movies, not the demo images) with all the HDR bells and whistles?

You can no more judge the quality of 4K Blu Ray based on 4K Netflix than you can judge the quality of 1080p Blu Ray based on 1080p Netflix. Streaming video currently sports nowhere near the amount of digital information (bitrate) as disc-based media.

Agreed. I've come across numerous dodgy Netflix encodes. Some of them on recently added titles. They are increasing compression to make up for 4k.

Exactly. And if the movie is crap, it doesn't matter how good the picture is, it'll still be a crap movie.

Most people never even realise the difference in quality anyway. Those details, more often than not, only come out in a side by side comparison.

Sure, there's a stellar leap between VHS and Blu Ray. But there's little in the way of a real logical leap between 1080P and 4K. By logical leap, I mean that the eyes, in general, just won't see it and the brain won't process it, until the media is played beside each other and I say that as someone who actually likes this sort of stuff.

Anyway, as you say (sort of), if the film is a good one, you end up not caring that much about the whizzbang it's being played on.
