    Hi all,

    I'm looking for some advice/information on how schools handle teachers who fall pregnant in their first year of contract.

    My story is that I've worked for 4 years in Dublin, I'm a secondary school teacher and was lucky enough to have a CID contract. The thing is I can't handle the commute any longer. It's 1.5 hours each way, total of 3 hours a day and a 1000km a week.
    I was hoping to get maternity leave in my current school but things didn't work out that way for myself and my husband. We've had complications in the fertility department. We're ready to start trying again but I want to make sure I'm in the most secure position job-wise as I possibly can. From what I've heard babies are an expensive addition!
    I've been lucky to secure a job closer to home, 1 year contract and full hours. The principal has told me the person who's hours I'm taking has returned west and the prospects for this job becoming CID are good.
    My question for here is - What will happen if I fall pregnant before Christmas, are the chances of me retaining my job in 2017/2018 slim to none? Should we hold off from trying until Dec/Jan? In a ideal world we'd like to start trying ASAP as neither of us are getting any younger, we are anxious to start our family and the sort of complications we've encountered this far are the sort to reoccur. But then if we need to be realistic about being able to afford our mortgage etc. we will of course wait.

    You cannot be discriminated against if pregnant. So presumably if your hours are still there in the second year, then you will be entitled to your CID. You may have to reinterview for them and this is where it gets murky unfortunately. Your new principal could be fine with hiring you and then finding they have to replace you while you are on leave. Or they might think this is a bit much and get someone else in the following year - using another reason of course, otherwise you could could take a case.

    If I was you and you were fortunate to be in the position to take a maternity leave, I would be explaining my personal circumstances to my principal in the hopes they would understand why you would want to start your family as soon as possible and state your dedication to the school and how you look forward to returning if the hours are there.

    Personally family trumps work - and as you say unfortunately there may be more complications so the sooner the better in my opinion. Money/work will always work out, family/health is more important. All the best in whatever you decide and good luck :)
