Mad one here for you , was having a coffee in a store today and overheard a lovely conversation . Apparently 2 students I will call John and Jane 😂 Have been in college for 3 years but have been claiming the dole the whole time . Won't go into details but they where outlining to their friend I will call Joseph lol the ins and outs of it , they said if they don't apply for grants they don't show up on any systems and give him a complete plan to do it as well.

Now am Abit sceptical about this but sounded real enough , Seriously does this actually happen , is there no checks from welfare to colleges about ppl or PPS num checks ? I thought they where joking but without knowing them it seemed a genuine conversation.

Depends on the course. Most people apply for courses through susi, but you can go direct to the college. I dont know about courses outside the susi system, but if you go direct, you still cant sit exams without registering for the course and you have to pay big money for the course, you need your p.p.s. number for this. I know someone who sat a course while collecting welfare and then got done for fraud when they registered for exams...

I wouldn't buy it. I was in college in the good times and there was huge signs up that Social Welfare crosscheck names, addresses and PPS numbers up with Student Admin and the fees office. That was when the unemployment rate was at 3% or 4%. The signs gave the impression they checked everyone and not just people with grants.

Suspected fraud should be reported to the dept.
