I don't know of any such regulation, that sounds like scaremongering to me, or maybe a club putting pressure on members to pay up early. If it is true, it could be to see if members are using their firearms for the purpose for which they were granted.

For example, if I am licenced to have a handgun for target shooting, then I must be a member of a range as that's the only place I can legally go target shooting with the handgun. If I let my membership to the range lapse, then officially I would no longer be doing target shooting so therefore I would have no grounds to have the handgun.

Maybe what you are talking about could be somewhat similar to the example I gave above.

Hopefully this will be happening nationwide. Too many cute f**kers abusing club memberships to get guns !

Every year our club sends a copy to the local Gardai and this year I forgot to send in a copy of my membership card with a licence that was due and got a quick polite call asking if I was still in the Club.

I'm thinking alot of guys used a gun club as a reason for needing a firearm and the gardai never questioned or checked it to be honest but maybe they got caught so to speak or there were incidents in relation to firearms and started to do back ground checks on everyone which is no harm. there's no shortage of chancers these days.

Last 2 years seemd to be checking. Issues in my area with lads trespassing etc few years ago. Had licences as gun club members but had not been members for 20 years! Local gun club chairman sorted it by supplying members list to guards. As ace says seems in some areas guards not check but took all at face value.

AFAIK, the clubs are also required to give attendance records for members to the Gardai also, to prove that it's not just a membership for gun owernship and that they're actually using the facilities.
