I've just got an email from Vodafone informing me that the charge for my broadband-only account will increase to €40 from €35 on 1st Aug.

I'm going to shop around, so I'm open to recommendations. I'm Cork city suburbs so connection isn't a problem.

This is coming from OpenEir, you wont find cheaper.

I was going to (reluctantly) suggest Pure Telecom as they were at €36 while Vodafone had originally increased it to €38. I've just checked Pure again and they seem to have risen to €44 / m!

I find the increases on broadband only all a bit amusing. Taking Vodafone... they claimed originally that their costs on broadband only had increased yet their next available plan (Home Essentials) is only €5 more expensive, includes a phone service and unlimited Irish landline calls. If cost increases are pushing broadband only up to the €40 mark, you would think surely it must be eating in on their Home Essentials plan. I guess that despite people migrating away from landlines and despite these unlimited call plans - giving someone a dialtone remains a lucrative little earner

OpenEir used to charge less for Standalone Bitstream vs Bistream and POTS. That just changed. In this way the standalone packages are rising to "meet" the with phone packages.

Standalone has the same operating costs as the combination nowadays so its not really surprising while it might seem counter-intuitive to Joe Soap.

It does indeed seem a little counter-ituitive. I would have thought it would be cheaper for Open Eir - even just marginally - to provide and maintain standalone as there's no requirement to keep a dial-tone humming on the line and with that, where people will quickly report a crackly phone line, I find their less likely to report poor broadband. I would have added less activity on their local switching equipment too but that's probably insignificant

Anyway, I'm only derailing here. Back to the OP

It's all about money. OpenEir were losing money through a combination of people using the phone less (or not paying for phome at all) and operators like Magnet, Pure Telecom, Digiweb and quite recently Vodafone providing the phone bit as VoIP meaning OpenEir don't get a cut of the usage or "line rental".

So the quick fix is to bump the cost of the non-POTS package closer to the cost of the POTS-inclusive package to make up for the loss.

Same position here, but in Dublin. All I need is broadband, no interest in phone or landline. Is €40 as cheap as I'm going to find it?

Yes, think so. I really hate a great price with tiny print saying for 3 months

I'd stick as you are, no point changing provider and going into a new contract.

On simply broadband too, have option of eir fibre to home and siro also meant to be coming my direction soon (Wexford Town) - have read that Vodafone offering existing customers basic siro package at €40, is there much to choose between basic fibre from eir and siro? hard to get info on when exactly siro will roll out here but don't want to jump the gun with 18month contract with eir

I'd expect SIRO to jump to a lot more than €40 after the introductory period, but it will be a lot faster.

found pricing on web which says 55e after 6 months at 40, doesn't give length of contract - guessing 18 months, eir at 45pm might do me

Is the fibre price going up?

If simply broadband is going to 40 a month. I'm as well to get 350mb fibre for 40 for 6 months.

Can you just get simply fibre?
