Best National Anthem

Watching the European Championships today and really enjoyed the Italians belting out their anthem. So rousing and would definitely get you in gear for a battle on the pitch. Same goes for the French and their murderous one.

I'd love you all to check out the second verse out in this clip. 80,000 fans belting it out sans music. The acapella part starts at 1:15, really spine-tingling stuff.

So what are some of your favorites? Maybe include specific times they were played or things like that.

    Always this:

That anthem makes me want to conquer countries. Think it has the same effect on Vladimir Putin

    I love Flower of Scotland.

The US anthem is too hard to sing. The high notes are awful high

I was very taken with the SLovakian one yesterday. Beautifully melodious.

I honestly believe Ireland has the best national anthem. After that I would put Scotland next.

Brazilian players giving it their all there. Remember in the semi final they were even more wound up for the anthem with the whole Neymar thing. They were emotional wrecks by the time the game started. No wonder Germany hammered them.....

    La Marseillaise

Rousing and euphonious in equal measure.

The Welsh anthem in Cardiff v England (Rugby). Best by a country mile.

It's Italian, of course it has to be a bit mental and unpredictable.

The Cornish 'national' anthem 'The Song of the Western Men' is excellent; it, the Russian anthem, and 'Scotland the Brave' are perfect examples of what a national anthem should be like.

The 'Swiss Psalm' is quite lovely too, very nice lyrics, albeit too non-secular. 'Els Segadors', which is the Catalan 'national' anthem, isn't bad either.

    Flower of Scotland.

Just don't think too much about the lyrics, they won a war, sent him homeward 'tae think again', which he did, he then came back and kicked seven shades of shíte out of them.

Saying that though, when they play England at home in rugby with the lone piper and muted music for the second verse it's seriously spine tingling stuff.

    Yup, the DDR one.

Crap politics but a beautiful song.

God save the Queen is popular in the Northern parts of Ireland :D

Flower of Scotland is one of the best.

Irelands call is pure muck, it doesnt make me feel passionate about this country.

I like the Iceland one, although it makes me feel like I should be in a church around Christmas time.

South American ones are the best. They have no real rhyme or reason and seem to go on forever.

Surprised no one has mentioned the German anthem and the Portuguese one last night before the match was quite good. The Polish one was very uninspiring

    1. Germany
    2. Italy
    3. Spain

    1. France
    2. Ireland
    3. Scotland
    4. Wales

As Murray Walker once famously said when thinking his mic was off, the Italian one bloody well goes on forever.
