im looking at the issue of client patient confidentiality. if a person suffered from an illness but did not give a psychologist consent to tell others about it, but the psychologist does, would it qualify as defamation?

It's only defamation if it's not true.

there is however the breach of duty that would be caused for a civil case... plus a possible disciplinary matter for their governing body

    It's only defamation is untrue.

You'd be looking at data protection or breach of privacy or misuse of private information (maybe) or something of that nature

    EDIT: Breach of confidence maybe

That's not the case. Whether a statement is defamatory is not linked to the truth or otherwise of the statement.

A true statement can give rise to liability under defamation if the Defendant cannot establish its truth to the satisfaction of the tribunal hearing the case.
