    :p

I could but I don't like to root my phones. I'm not in a mad rush, so I decided to sit on it and see what happens re. Marshmallow and the announced S9. Although, I'm sure the S9 will be a lot more expensive.

** Sit on it, metaphorically speaking :D

Whats the time lag for the exchange rate to be reflected on Amazon and/or for consumers with the bank?

Pay with your credit card in sterling and you'll get current bank rates.

Sterling has taken a tumble this morning. The bank of England will likely step in at some point - but in the meantime there are some bargains to be had!

Most rates aren't provided by the banks themselves, but go by the daily rate set by Visa or Mastercard.

What will happen to buying from the Uk? Will anything be different now they're not in the EU, customs etc?

    Tg for that :)

Back to sterling , I got a refund of £69 last Monday into my bank account, got €90 for it. Online converters are showing same rate today? Are they not updated yet or am I missing something?

Payments via PayPal on the other hand are based on the exchange rate at the time of payment and changed to € before processing guaranteeing you the rate at the time of payment instead of the rate by Visa/Mastercard at the time of processing.

Exchange rate is £1=€1.10 on FX Street. On the visa app to check what rate applies to your card it's still €1.31.

Might have to wait until later or tomorrow for full benefit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭Keith186

Checked Amazon's rate and it's €1.289 which is the first time I've ever seen it offer a better one than the visa card. Still poor though, hopefully they'll update soon.

God damn it you're right! I should have waited a couple of days before buying that new watch on Amazon

Enjoy it while it lasts as it won't be such a "good day to be alive" when we have to trade through a hostile UK in two years and customs come into play.

You can cancel before it gets dispatched with Amazon. (if it's not too late)

I might just default back to my plan A again . I was planning to head up North and buy another car at the latter end of this year if the exchange rate was good. I bought my current car in October 2 yr ago up there . I saved nearly €3k on a C-max at the time compare to down here.

Time to start looking again I think.

    Yayyyy...Happy Brexit day.

I'm not so sure there will be the massive bargains that some people seem to be expecting. The pound will drop in value but because of the potential for disruption of the EU the euro may also drop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,420 ✭✭✭.G.

I bought something a few weeks ago on revolut and it exchanged as 844. Today it's 815.

On the downside UK retailers are pushing prices up to compensate cos it costs them more to buy stock.

Which Visa app is this? Never knew there was a way to see what realtime fx rate Visa were using. Bit of a revelation for me

Is there a lag on visa/mastercard rates (closure on previous day or something like that), or do they reflect intra-day changes ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 982 ✭✭✭VincePP

Too many people are sucked in by second rate media commentary. The world has not ended, the markets will always work back to fundamentals and the UK economy is strong and will not weaken much.

If Britain voted remain, sterling would have moved to about 75p / 1.33. Now that they have voted out it looks to be settling at 80p / 1.25 - about the same as it was a couple of weeks ago and similar to what it was in February.

Here's your real time rate http://finance.yahoo.com/quote/EURGBP%3DX/news

Seems like i missed the 1.10 rate :( it now back to 1.25

does not compute, you still have to buy the voucher today(apologies if I am misisng somethign obvious) !!

An example: Today you purchase a game not out till 20th November, Amazon won't charge you till about the 20th November, and they will use the exchange rate of the 20th of November, and not the exchange rate of today.

This applies for credit/debit cards at least, as mentioned above I don't think this applies for Paypal.

It never went anywhere near 1.10. GBP/Eur hit a low of 1.21 for about 5 minutes at 5.24am.

Actually I think that's a mistake I posted initially. Looks to be the $ exchange rate. Apologies!

Credit cards now use "spot rates" + a margin for almost all transactions as most transactions are made in real time.

In a case where transactions are recored bu only uploaded at the end of a day, then the closing rates apply - but this would be quite unusual these days.

If ever you needed your revolut card, its now!

actually tracked the price this morning on their app to see where its going.

Its all relative....its only down approx 5c per € over last few months...Unless your spending 000's its a waste of time.

Unless you want to save a few quid, then no.

Bad media outlets are spinning this that the pound is diving when it is, but relatively only a few pence down. Its nothing like years ago when it dropped.

I'd wait till Monday before buying anything. Your credit card provider likely won't update their GBP exchange rates until the end of the today.

utter rubbish. Maybe 20 years ago that was the case. Everything is done in real time these days.

Rates are nothing to do with nay "provider" rates are set by visa / mastercard themselves. Providers may charge an additional fee which is in their terms and conditions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,084 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

Revolut are using the latest exchange rate. I've already made 2 orders on Amazon.co.uk at 8am this morning (had items I was waiting to buy until the sterling plummeted, as I predicted).

Saved about €15 on what it would have cost me yesterday.

    Eyeing a new PS4 too...

That was my impression as well.

And which way do people think the pound is heading next week? I don't think it is crazy to think it could drop further down?

and in the case of amazon you are not charged until its shipped so processing at the earliest would be that day (you can buy and use a voucher to lock in today as shipping day).

is it cheaper to take money out of ATM in UK using debit or credit card?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

I think that withdrawing from an ATM using a credit card usually incurs cash demand fees, so the debit card is likely to be cheaper, assuming that you have money in the account. Could depend on the bank/card.
