Why the need for the N30 ?

    The N30 seems bizarre to me, it connects New Ross to Enniscorty. Why is it a National Primary road? I know it was created for traffic travelling to Dublin from Waterford to avoid having to go through Wexford, but with the M9 upgrade Does this make the route completely redundant? It seems a waste of a number that could be reassigned to perhaps the outer bypass of Dublin or some other route corridor that would serve the country better.

    It may be busy but there are plenty of busy secondary and regional roads that are busy too. I just don't get why it has primary status.

    Why pick on the n30, instead of the n31, 29, 27, 26, 23, 19,

    Each of those roads connect to important infrastructure. N19 Shannon Airport, 23 - Kerry Airport, 27 - Cork Aiport , , 29 Belview port , 31 connects to the M1 avoiding the N2. N26 could be thrown into this perhaps too. But back to the N30, it doesnt seem needed. There is nothing of national importance in New Ross or Enniscorty.

    Several roads were redesignated national primaries in the 1990s

    * N18 - ex. N64 from Claregalway to Oranmore
    * N26 - ex. N57 from Ballina to Swinford
    * N27 - ex. R600 from Cork to the airport
    * N28 - ex. R609
    * N30 - ex. N79
    * N31 - ex. mish mash of roads to Dun Laoighre port

    It was decided by the powers that be that these road were of strategic national importance and were redesignated as National Primary Routes.

    There's a plan to upgrade the N30 from where the 2006 upgrade finishes on the Enniscorthy side of Clonroche to the junction with the future New Ross BP. It's approx 8km in length and when completed will mean the N30 will be upgraded along it's complete length.

    Re-designate to its former secondary number N79. Its very unlikely to happen and the rationale in it even getting a primary status in the first place is what baffles me. The N30 could be reserved for the outer bypass if ever built. I know this will never happen so im more wondering what was the idea behind it been assigned a primary status number ?

    The N30 provides a route from Wicklow, Arklow, Gorey, Enniscorthy to New Ross and Waterford and on towards Cork/Limerick.

    The N27/29 are really only access routes to ports/airports, they're pretty short to be a route.
    The N31 isn't even an access to a port anymore.

    There is no primary route serving the south port in Dublin.

    As for using the number 30 for an outer bypass, this will break the reasonably coherent numbering system we have for national routes.
    26 was the only out of order route, before the nra decided to use 40 for the n25/22 around Cork

    I kinda agree with the OP here. Routes N30, N40, N50, N60, N70, N80 and N90 should be reserved for city bypasses.

    Surely the N10 is also unnecessary. Kilkenny is a similar distance from the M9 as Carlow. Bit of a waste of a primary number.

    I know its a bit off topic but with all this "United Ireland" talk a complete renumbering of the system will be required but that's another days topic . The N10 is puzzling to me too, but i'm guessing its due to the fact Kilkenny is a "City" of sorts and in that case requires a primary route. The N31 will more than likely be detrunked soon as pointed out the port is gone so it is no longer required. Dublin south port is kind of served via the M50 across the Eastlink which provides a pretty direct route.

    DLPC will do everything possible to keep any vestige of status despite all scheduled services gone. They'd put up a fight for something as minor as the N Road anyway

    Start a thread on the other six if they are of interest or bothering you, the op wants to discuss the N30 to which is the point of the thread.

    I tend to agree with the OP. I think the N30 should revert to being the N79. Much of the route is of poor quality - narrow and twisty. Before the M9 motorway was built it was an alternative route from Dublin to Waterford. Now, it basically provides a route to Cork and Waterford for Wicklow and north Wexford.

    As an aside, the N30 just as it heads out of New Ross goes through a breathtakingly beautiful bit of sylvan woodland.

    The likelihood of this happen is very low have there really been any high profile de trunking of roads apart from the likes of the N32 ?

    Mainly just the N routes inside the M50, the N52 between Dundalk & Ardee, the N80 between Moate and Tullamore, the N71 inside the N40 in Cork and the N82. That's about it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 627 ✭✭✭JeffK88

    According to this the N82 is gone but yet its still signed as such and referred to as an active "N" road ?http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/2012/si/53/made/en/print

    So the road that is and is not a national road.

    The N82 is signed as the L2011 on the N7 outbound, but on the N7 inbound, there is some ~2006 signage referring to it as the N82.

    So they haven't got quite around to changing that. In time I guess
