S-Lo will be next to withdraw now watch this space

Legitimate reason for GMac. Rory on the other hand went on holidays to Barbados recently (Zika high risk zone) and lives in Florida (all year round red alert Zika zone). He should be called out on his BS. Sad thing is people will believe this claptrap!

At least the withdrawals will allow paddy to play in it and considering he was one of the players on the delegation to get golf in the Olympics, it's well deserved.

Can see a number of other players pulling out shortly mainly jason day.

I wonder if Lowry bails, will people be as quick to point to the amount of golf he played in Florida recently :pac:

It's actually hard to take in the way some lads slate Rory.

Yesterday there was the obvious theme in regard to why Rory pulled out but let's not start that again.

Today his countryman pulls out but it's for legit reasons.

Actually hilarious the way some lads think

    From the CDC...

    US States

    • No local mosquito-borne Zika virus disease cases have been reported in US
states, but lab tests have confirmed Zika virus in travelers returning to the
United States. These travelers have gotten the virus from mosquito bites and
some non-travelers got Zika through sex with a traveler.
    • With the recent outbreaks, the number of Zika cases among travelers visiting
or returning to the United States will likely increase.
    • These imported cases could result in local spread of the virus in some areas
      of the United States.

So, no Zika in Florida, whereas lots of Zika in Brazil.

For every hero there has to be a villain!!

Shane is the 'new' hero, therefore Rory has to be the villain.

Plus, for whatever reason, people seem to think that they have some 'ownership' of people in the public eye. Maybe he doesn't want to go because of Zika, or because his Ma won't let him out to play, or because he hates Samba music, or because he's made a calculated business decision - that's his decision.

So that'll be Harrington in so - happy for the guy.

Paul McGinley is a guy I feel very sorry for.

And what about Barbados? He couldn't be too concerned about the virus if he went on holiday there.

Just face it, his Zika excuse is a lie. If he just came out and said he didn't want to play more people would actually respect the decision. All he is doing is creating more panic among people who will believe this BS.

I would laugh if the Brazilian authorities launched legal action against these golfing muppets for slandering their country.

I know of one of our Olympians (won't name name or gender) who has told his/her family not to come to Rio as he/she will be too worried about them contracting Zika. I kid you not. The media have created this hysteria and Rory is not helping with these lies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,697 ✭✭✭Chivito550

Actually I take back my comment that GMac's reason is legit. Graeme McDowell's first child was born August 25, 2014. He spent the previous four days playing the Barclays tournament.

At least Harrington will be proud to play for Ireland, and I'll be proud to support him out there in Rio.

Yeah exactly. Like Brazilians not travelling to Ireland because of the soaring HIV cases in this country. Imagine the hypocrisy on this forum in that case

That's a relief for GMac, considering he also lives in Florida.
It's amazing the amount of nonsense people will come up with just to have a pop at Rory.

Edit: that wasn't directed at you Alchemist.

I'm sorry lads. After careful reflection, and somber flagulation i have to withdraw my name from consideration for this summer as Olympic golf tournament. I have very pale skin, and i fear the sunburn would have too much of an impact on my future family plans

Edit to add. I think it conflicts with my monthly medal anyway

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,288 ✭✭✭mickmackey1

If they're serious about golf in the Olympics, the authorities should ban absentees from the Open and PGA. Except Adam Scott, who gave a truthful reason that he just wasn't motivated.

I have no issue with Rory. I think he is a magnificent golfer.

I have an issue with dishonesty, and making up lies to get out of playing in the Olympics.

There is nothing nonsensical about pointing out his hypocrisy about holidaying in Barbados, a place with a significant Zika risk.

As great a player as he is, McIlroy is not above criticism, no matter how much the Boards.ie golf forum like to think he is.

    yeah right!

The IGF are the body recognised by the IOC for the purposes of getting golf into the Games.

The Open is organised by the R&A, the US Open by the USGA, the Masters by Augusta National and the US PGA is organised by the PGA of America.....you think any of those organisations are going to start banning players because they wouldn't play in the Olympics?

I follow all sports actually. I just choose to post mainly in the athletics forum. I posted more regularly across boards (including golf) with a previous account which I decided to close as I wanted a break from boards for awhile. Not that I need to explain myself to some randommer on the internet.

So you admit to holding Multi accounts on boards?

Your only contributions to the golf forum are banging a drum about Rory WD from the Olympics.... Hes given his reason, hes worried about the virus, as a young guy whos recently engaged and has stated he would like a family, that decision must be taken as read and respected.

absolutely.......and in golfing terms there's plenty to criticise and discuss, especially in relation to his recent game.

......but why criticise him for not playing in a tournament of no consequence on a course of questionable quality in a country with a minimal golfing pedigree? It's not like golf has always been in the Olympics - the last time it was there, was over 100 years ago and even then only 2 countries sent teams!!

If he went and in doing so it impacted adversely on his late season form, especially in relation to the Ryder Cup, he'd be rightly panned for schlepping off to the tournament!!

Been watching golf majors since 1995, when John Daly beat Rocca in the playoff at St Andrews, just for your information. Have never missed a Ryder Cup, have attended numerous golf events in Ireland with my dad over the years (Irish Open, European Open, WGC in Mt Julliet). But yeh I haven't a clue!

I've said that he should just be honest and say he doesn't want to play. The Zika excuse has been proven to be a lie as he has holidayed in Barbados, only adds to the unnecessary hysteria about the disease, and shows him to be a bit dishonest regarding this.

You seem to not realise the difference between being on hols and being out playing golf.

I picked up Dengue a few years ago when working in Indonesia - for all the times I've been there, it wasn't a problem because I was working in offices, in cities, moving around in cars and staying in hotels. I got it when I was carrying out a site visit.
