Making a return to the big screen in 2017

    power-rangers-movie-logo-178928.jpg

    Synopsis
Five ordinary high school kids Zack, Kimberly, Billy, Trini, and Jason must become something extraordinary when they learn their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat led by Rita Repulsa. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

Seeing as they were a part of my childhood, I am definitely going to go see this, partly out of nostalgia..

I thought the suits looked terrible but maybe I'm alone in that.

I'm curious to see how it gets on. I was a massive fan in the 90s (and I'm still pissed off how Jason lost the leadership of the Rangers to Tommy :pac:)

Did anyone ever catch Zyurangers which was the Japanese version that the Power Rangers was based on? I watched a few episodes years ago and found I liked it better. In this one the Red Ranger and Green Ranger are brothers and it's a darker show in tone. Also the Yellow Ranger is a guy which explained the lack of a skirt on the US version. :)

Apparently the suits are not suits per se, but "Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made.", according to the production designer.

March 2017 is a quick turnaround for a film if they are only starting to film it now.

I'd imagine it will be CGI Heavy as well 9 months seems very short to make a movie these days.

Filming for the movie wrapped in May.. Probably gonna be half practical, half CGI, especially the Mega-Zords..

I agree with all of this!

Someone who runs the Power Rangers Facebook page accidentally posted a teaser trailer, but it's been taken down since with this update.
Looks like this went up a bit early on the Power Ranger's Facebook page on accident and Lionsgate has asked us to pull it down. To view the trailer later, come on back to ComicBook.com at 2PM Eastern where we are covering the panel LIVE from Madison Square Garden for the Power Rangers New York Comic Con panel. Not only will you get the new trailer, but amazing new details about the new movie from the team themselves.

So 6 our time, the teaser should be released online.

I was looking forward to it before as a nice fun cinema outing in March, but now I'm quite excited for it.

    No morphine this time around?

They'd hardly give it away in the first teaser trailer.

I mean, I guess it doesn't look absolutely atrocious...

Have to admit, I really liked that trailer. It had some funny enough moments, the characters seem interesting enough, Rita seems fairly creepy and although the Zords fight will probably be a CGI/Transformers-type battle, it might be okay.

Still not sure if I'd bother with seeing it in the cinema, but still might be a good watch.

I never watched Power Rangers as a kid so I have nothing invested, nor have any strong opinion about the change in tone in general, but what does irk me somewhat is the slightly belittling / knowing self-mockery within the trailer.

Why can't these blockbusters just embrace their origins and inherent goofiness, instead of coming across embarrassed, either by overcompensating with excessive angst (the recent Fantastic Four debacle), or have the characters give the 4th wall a shake by openly remarking how daft it all must seem.

Bits of that seemed really cool. Then the CGI kicked up a notch...

James Gunn wrote about this, the problem as he saw it is that execs take the wrong inspiration from Deadpool.

What they should have taken: Make something which lets the original material people love shine while adding things around it works because these characters are beloved for a reason.

What they did take: People want adult themes and 4th wall breaking.

People want that specifically from Deadpool because they are core concepts of the Deadpool mythos.

Anyone see this? It had some strong elements underneath the surface but, unfortunately, it was largely boring... Banks was fantastic, as was Hader. Cranston was good as he could be with what he had to do. The main cast was okay, the story just moved a bit slowly. I wonder how much Krispy Kreme paid...

I've seen it a few times now, I thought it was a good movie, obviously I'd say that due to childhood bias :pac:

First time seeing it, I didn't expect Trini to be
    LGBTQ
, not complaining and the minor changes
    Zordon being the Red Ranger
    and
Rita Repulsa being the Green Ranger
    .

Also obvious as night follows day what the sequel will be about :pac:

I thought it was okay to good. It took way too long for them to become the Rangers and when they did, things got super cheesy.

That being said, I thought the performances overall were pretty good, the characters were likeable. Some actually very funny bits throughout, and the story was surprisingly deep for most of the characters (though very Breakfast Club). I also liked
Zordon and Rita being former Rangers themselves. Will enjoy seeing them explore that further in a sequel

So yeah, it was pretty watchable and I'll probably watch it again in the future. Nothing great or spectacular, but far better than it could have been.
