A3, 1.8 TFSI or 2.0 TDI

Won't pretend to know much about cars, have driven only diesel in the past (more you accident than design). Now looking at changing my 2005 A4 1.9 TDI a 2014 A3, but am confused about what engine to opt for. I know there are economic reasons for choosing different engine sizes & fuel types, but I really just want to understand drive quality (if that's even the right term). For some reason, I associate the smaller petrol engine with being as lively as a larger Diesel engine, but not as being as sturdy / tough. Is there anything in this?

    Whats your annual mileage?

For most people driving a diesel is out of necessity. i.e They do large mileage and its a compromise to get good mix of economy and power. If you do average or below average mileage the petrol tends to be a better choice.

The petrol engine is 180HP, there is a 150 and 180HP variant in the diesel. You could test drive both. If you have driven diesel cars all your life you may prefer it

Thanks Conzy. When I originally bought the A4 I was doing about 36,000 km per yr. But now, thanks to a much shorter commute, I'm doing 16,000 km max, realistically, I'd say I've averaged closer to 13,000 km in the last 2 - 3 years. Will try your advice.

I wouldn't pay extra towards the 1.8 TSI. I did not have a lot to do with it, only in an Octavia for a bit, but it seemed no stronger than 1.4. Only once you rev it, it gets some punch...
