Golf GTI DSG gear change problem

It's a MKV. It always autos down much too low. If I'm travelling along a main road, 100km/h limit, and I put it into 6th gear manually it won't stay there. The auto kicks in and brings it back down to 3rd. If I'm tootling along in traffic in 2nd the auto drops down to 1st. It always autos down much too low.

Any ideas what might be causing this? Does is look like the gear box itself, or might it be something else causing it to do this?

When last was the box serviced?

Sorry, don't know that, would have to check. Was always a main dealer service until fairly recently and they always did the manufacturer recommended work at the recommended time.

I have seen what main dealers should have done too at recommended services. What mileage is on your car?

Go through your service history from your main dealer to see is the box serviced to spec.

I bet it was never done

Is there a sport mode on the car, usually if that is selected it will drop a couple of gears and maintain higher revs.

I should have been done about three times at that mileage.

i've a dsg box in a touran it needs a change of oil and filter every 60.000 kilometers

Its something you dont want to scrimp on

Is it a wet clutch or dry clutch DSG?

If wet, then a change of fluid and filter might sort it.

If dry, then there are known issues with the "sealed for life" fluid becoming conductive and playing havoc with the mechatronics.

It's highly doubtful that a gearbox service will cure those symptoms IMO.

How long has the car been behaving like this?

Sounds to me like you are in Sports mode....if you manually override with the paddles, you can get it into 6th gear as you are doing but as soon as the box drops back into auto (sports mode), then it'll drop down a few gears to give you the best acceleration possible.
Did you try putting it into D?

My mkV DSG will operate exactly like this when its in 'S', make sure you have it in drive & not sport mode. If it's telling you it's in drive it might just be a selector problem or something.

It's acting as if it is but it's definitely not in sport mode.

Get the oil and filter in that dsg box changed pronto, and hope no damage has been done.
