Hi all, wondering any of you can help in any way.

my wife recently had a baby and, as I smoke, i've removed myself from the house and out to the garage. I've just been out now and noticed several little insects scurrying about. I took a photo of one and had a look online to identify them. I've found that they are called silverfish and also that they are not native to Ireland.

My query is. How do I get rid of this things? Has anyone noticed them in there homes?

Any help with this is greatly appreciated!

Insect spray will kill them. They live in clutter mostly. Clean out and tidy the garage.

    They are native.

    Don't use insect sprays.
You're going to kill other insects too, and it's a waste of time because others will arrive soon after. Silverfish do very little harm if any. Have your fag and just ignore them.

Oh I agree but, being realistic, is he wants rid of them in the garage then he needs to tidy up and get rid of what's there.

Dessicated (sp?) powder dries them out and they die.

Silverfish like damp, dark places and shady cover. Sweep out dust and air out the premises, and open a few windows: if a place is clean, dry and bright, they won't go there.

A few are found almost everywhere, don't worry about it. They are nocturnal anyway, so most people rarely see them except maybe when going to the loo at night, etc.

No, they are a wingless insect in their own right.

    Thanks for all the comments.

Just to clarify. The garage area doesn't have much clutter in it, a small chest freezer a lawnmower and some fishing gear. There are a good few spider taking up residence in there which I thought would keep other insects at bay. It is a bright enough space during the day and at night is sporadically lit with fluorescent lights. There is no car parked in there as it was going to turned into another room.

I will try to get a powder or even a glue trap as I've read the like glucose so maybe some sugar on it will draw them in and leave the spiders to their own device!

Welcome to the nocturnal world of your garage.
You should just try to fit in, and get along with the other residents.
They have been living there for years; you can't just show up and start trying to kill everyone else :pac:

    Exactly!
What harm are they doing? I just don't understand people most of the time.

They do very little harm, I agree, but will demolish any cloth, paper or cardboard in the garage.

I believe cinnamon will deter them. What a sweet smelling garage - or would it mask the cigarette smoke? . ;)

    All true.
