Lads, have a weird problem with our ever trusty GP.
It has recently become more sluggish and not really in the mood to accelerate and today I've noticed it seems to "surge" when you accelerate.
I must admit it's overdue a service now but from a general point of view it's as tight as a drum the car.
No leaks, no excessive oil consumption and no hissing coming from the boost pipes so I'm ruling out potential boost leaks.
    Any ideas? No EML either.
    GP 1.9 Multijet 2006.

You know exactly what he means ffs.

bear - is it just clogged up with short runs? Driven too gently? Might be worth taking it for a long blast with some millers thrown in the tank?

Possibly, but it doesn't get too many short runs.
I was thinking a possible EGR problem (clogged) but it doesn't do the nothing nothing nothing whoosh as you'd get with the EGR.
Instead you get ok acceleration low down but pop it in 5th say and then it just slowly gathers speed whereas before it would pop up very quickly.
Might try and give it a blast tomorrow and see

Gave it a blast up the motorway. No smoke from what I could see but still pretty sluggish and no real pull.
    Any other suggestions?

If it's like the 1.9/2.4 JTD it sounds to me like one of the boost solienod vacuum pipes is spilt or a faulty boost solienod
That's assuming your turbo is VNT

If so follow the thin rubber pipe up from the turbo to find the boost solienod and also check the pipe feeding the solienod
The splits can be very small in them.
Another good Check is to look at the rod on the turbo that is actuated by the vacuum. Get someone to start the car and see if it moves

I believe it is a VNT turbo (can't be 100%).
Wouldn't this throw up a fault? With my 156 it would light up the EML when the solenoid failed.

On my experiences with 156's & 159's it some times puts a fault code up depending on what position the vanes are stuck in . I think it only throws a code if it overboosts . On all 7 diesel alfas I've had I have had to change either the pipes and or solienod

Also on my other halfs 1.3 jtd Astra her vanes were actually stuck in the high boost position , no power at all until 3k then would fly it . Used innotec turbo cleaner to free the vanes . Again no EML

    Need to take another look.
In my case it's I've got good power in 1/2nd and then in 3rd it starts to struggle and 4-6th is just slow.
