Solicitor fees - % of award

At the start of a personal injury claim, I signed a document with my solicitor whereby they would take x% of the award if successful to a certain value, and x% if it went over that value. I didn't think anything of it at the time, but have been reading since that they are not actually allowed do that? Does it matter that I signed a document agreeing to it?
