Do you have a mentor for your career?

As above question? Do you have one and if no, have you ever tried to have one?

I've had s few in the past and they moved roles/retired etc so we didn't stick at it long term but I found it hugely beneficial to have someone challenge me on my future plans to ensure I was on the right path for me.

I'm also starting to mentor someone now myself and I'm curious to see what others may look for in a mentor...

I'm not trying to hijack but taking this as a general chat about mentors, I've been thinking about this lately. I've worked in buying in construction based SME's and am trying to level up by studying towards a degree in procurement and seeking jobs in more sophisticated environments. The idea of finding a mentor sounds intriguing but it's miles away from the world I'm used to.

I have been both a Mentor and a Mentee.
    • Done right it can be very productive.
    • Set the rules.
    • Mentee drives the relationship.
    • Trust & confidentiality are key.
    • Nobody in your management structure.
    • External mentors are best.
