Waste disposal unit

I've recently moved house, and the new house has a two-sink unit with a normal big sink and an Insinkerator waste disposal unit under the small sink. It doesn't seem to be completely in working order; it looks like there's a bottle top or something stuck in it. The pipe below it also seems to be a bit leaky; it'll sometimes leak a few drops of water if any water gets down it. The dishwasher drains down the same pipe.

It doesn't look like there's a u-bend; is that normal? There's sometimes a slight drain smell from it. The main sink does have a u-bend.

I don't really have a use for it (and didn't think they were even allowed in Dublin, anyway); I'm inclined to just get it removed and have the small sink set up as a normal sink. Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so is it something any plumber could do?
