I used to have a tax credit that both ex and I could claim ( the one parent family tax credit) then law was changed only one parent can claim. My ex has since remarried? I am still single why can't I claim his credit? Seems very unfair. She can't relinquish this credit to me since I am still a single parent. Why am I being penalised?

I'm not familiar with the regulations, but guess that it's because you aren't the main equal caregiver, after all you only "take my kid when possible" - but not even every weekend. (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057611717)

The credit is due to the primary carer of the child, under certain conditions. If that person so wishes, they can relinquish the credit to the secondary carer.

If your ex has remarried, she no longer is entitled to the credit. Therefore, if she is no longer entitled to it, she has nothing that she could relinquish to you

I'll have you know it's not my decision that I'm in this position with my ex.. the law is convenient that she can cause a breakup and up and leave with our child and move as far as away as she wants yet you seem to think we're deadbeat dads. Typical.

She is no longer entitled to the credit, if you take the child from fridayvto Sunday you can claim it
