Im considering looking at a Mondeo Diesel and id prefer an Auto. I aware that Tax is higher on the auto but im willing to pay the extra, my only concern is the auto transmission.
I recall reading somewhere that the auto box in these fords can be problematic,
has anyone got any experience with these cars and auto transmissions?

    Thanks in advance

No problem with them really oil and filter has to be changed every 60k or you will have trouble though.
Lovely car to drive was going to bring one in from across the water but the duty was 1k more than a manual.

Just seen your looking at an 08 thought it was 10 those gearboxes are maintenance free as far as i can remember.

I'd say the automatic is less trouble than a manual with the DMF :)

    Thanks martin

I have my eye on a damaged one and theres no history with the car so dont know if the oil and filter where changed, its currently at 160kms. The TB was changes at 120 kms, this is marked on the engine.

I'd take that as a pinch of salt unless there's documentation to prove it.

Its the only info I have on the car currently, the service book it lost.
Id be inclined to believe its genuine as the car is clean and has 4 new Bridgestone tyres, this is usually a sign that some has taken care of a car. The date the the belt was changed is even noted on the engine cover

Haha, I remember I was selling a car once and I got a buyer calling me from DoneDeal.

    Here's how the conversation went:
Him: "Has the timing belt been changed?"
Me: "I'm not sure. I haven't changed the timing belt during my ownership and I don't have service history for it so I don't know"
Him: "Just open the bonnet and check the engine, it should say when it was last changed"

I can just imagine the amount of sellers that get away with just marking the TB cover with tippex :p

Assume nothing. Do proper background checks on the car. While the service book might be lost most of the service information should be available from the dealers who did the servicing. And the majority of UK car owners are particular about servicing and documenting it. A lost service history book while possible is just too convenient unless proven otherwise.

UK fleet cars rack up hefty annual mileage while still looking fresh because most of them spend their time on the decent motorway network. Altering the mileage is not a big effort on a cheap bought high mileage car that is in good nick. Writing a tb change note with tipex on the engine cover can add to the illusion and proves nothing without paperwork. The Mondeo is one of the most favorite fleet cars in the UK so I certainly wouldn't buy one without doing proper mileage and history verification on one.

2008 would have the first generation of AWTF-80 transmission. That is a Japaneese gearbox from Aisin-Warner, with torque converter based design. Does not need DMF - so happy days...

Unfortunately, those boxes are often being neglected by not having the ATF changed at all. If it runs fine now and changes smoothly, get it.

Do three static changes over ~1000km to a quality JWS3309 liquid (Toyota ATF T-IV or Volvo 1161540-8 are usually priced very good at the dealers network). That would make the fluid clear (approximately 90% will get replaced that way).

I'd change it (the tb) as a precaution. Tippex on the cover is cheap.

Very true and those belts are not very expensive to replace either.

Would that model Mondeo not have the wet and dry belts? If it does they are quite a bit more expensive than a standard belt....

It is a 2.0 litre diesel,

Is it not the 1.8 that have the more complex timing belt ?

1.8 have the wet belts and are fairly expensive.
The 2l are cheap enough to replace and a cheaper engine to maintain.
