Just wondering how the job situation is for ppl out there? I don't hear as much about teachers not being able to get work as I gave in the past few years. Are things improving? im 7 years in and no closer to permanency. Any thoughts?

Have applied for a few jobs - no interviews yet.

Still stuck with part time CID. Unsuccessful at a couple of recent interviews. On the verge of giving up altogether.

Don't :) At least you have CID - I go from maternity to sick leave but no CID yet - have to remain positive.

Yes, but there are alternatives that would improve my chances of getting a mortgage. I don't want to leave teaching but I've given it over a decade of my life and I'm trapped as it is.

I hope you can get something more secure this year - your own full time hours.

A colleague was in the same position as yourself A.... low hours CID, scraping together rent. He reckoned even if he did get a mortgage he'd be still tight on money (and choice) for another 10 years at least. So he went abroad to work as a labourer, he reckons he can come back in about 5years with enough money for a substantial downpayment and at least 'afford' to try and be a teacher again. Even if he hung around now and got full time hours he wouldn't have a good enough deposit (with lower repayments) to get a decent house in a good location either.
So maybe there is an alternative abroad that would put you in a better financial position in terms of a 5 year plan! Teaching in the UAE if you've no kids/family/mortgage commitments might be a good opportunity (but do your homework).

Don't let the quietness fool you in to thinking people are getting teaching work. I have nine friends that have given up their dream of teaching after many years of subbing, competition is still fierce when it comes to jobs.

So I got a phone call this morning to go for interview for my own hours. Maybe my luck is finally changing. Fingers crossed. I would be so lucky to get a permanent job in this climate. Good luck everyone.

I'm 9 years in, I've travelled to the uk for a couple of years. I'm back and no closer to my own hours, no chance of getting a house. I think about giving up but then I think about how much I love my job. I'm stuck, I don't know what to do.

I have had two 3 year stints each of these were career breaks. This was when it was a4 year CID, 2 years in the uk. This year was 9 hours, I found it hard to survive on the money.
