Can anyone please give me some advise on irons...I'm a high handicapper golfer looking to buy a new set of irons ...I'm presently using a cheap set bought in Heaton's 15 years ago and I have been told they are crap and effecting my game ...
I'd like to get a set that would help a high handicapper and would like to try and get them second hand

No offence, but anything you get will be an improvement.

Second hand set of Ping 15's 20's , Callaway xhots, check out done deal, might get them for 200 mark, they would be a vast improvement .

Yes, good forgiving clubs, check out reviews , couple of years old, but forgiving and great reputation.

PS you dont have to go for that exact set, it was just an example, that set is missing a 6 iron , but shop around,
Ring Pro Golf in Athlone, give him a budget, and requirements etc and he will def have something .

You may have to factor in a new set of grips(~€50), you won't be seeing much of an improvement if you can't hold onto the clubs properly!

What is your definition of forgiveness?
You can slice, hook, shank, and top the most forgiving club on the planet.
What the manufacturer refers to as forgiveness is balls coming up short from off center hits.
You have a choice however, you could buy a less forgiving club and improve your swing or buy a super forgiving game improvement iron and never learn a thing.
It's in the interest of golf shops to sell clubs but it should be your goal to get better.
You can't feel an off center hit with a super game improvement iron so how can you correct it?

Seem like a good price for a full set, not sure you want graphite shafts though.

Avoid the type of heads called "blades" or "muscle-back". Avoid clubs that are called "players clubs". Avoid clubs with stiff or ladies or senior shafts (unless of course you are a lady or a senior with a low swing speed). However be careful as sometimes a stiff shaft is not much stiffer than a regular shaft (makers mess around to appease buyers).

Go for a good set of 2nd hand makes such as Ping, Taylormade, Callaway etc. A cavity back head will have a hollowed out back and go for these.

If the grips are worn then fit new ones.

get fitted by a club pro either to get a nice set thats just right, see it as a good investment for 10 years or so... worth every penny... tried all the brands out when i was getting it done.. although I liked Callaway, they just didnt feel as good as Nike when I struck them. A set that feels nice is worth 10 shots a round minimum ;)
