I have just finished my last year of my degree but I have one repeat to do in August and I was just wondering when (if I don't get employment during that period that is) can I claim for job seekers allowance? When does the 3 month period commence in my case for someone who has a repeat to do in August?

    Thanks for you help

    Kind regards

If you have just left school you cannot get Jobseeker's Allowance. To get Jobseeker's Allowance you must have been out of school for 3 months and you must be at least 18 years of age.
Third-level students cannot claim Jobseeker's Allowance or Benefit while they are studying full-time. This disqualification also applies to the summer holiday periods between academic years (unless you are a mature student). However once you have finished college permanently you can claim a jobseeker's payment if you cannot find work. This is also the case if you leave college without finishing your course.

Call into your local office and ask.

    Thanks for your reply.

    Will do...

I wonder would it be from my last exam or when I finished up lectures.

The info mp22 is referring to is in relation to someone who exits secondary school early. In the OPs situation you have to be no longer registered with the college. In this case I would presume its August. Just to re-iterate the 3 month rule does not apply to people in post primary situations.

    Thanks for your reply, eastbono.

So in essence I can apply for jobseeker allowance after I get my repeat result?
