Car making loud revving sound...

This morning I noticed my car is making revving sounds when accelerating, there is also quite a bit of vibration noticeable in the cabin. It's a Toyota Avensis 2002 1.6 petrol. It seems to be driving normally apart from this though I'm scared to drive as usual in case it's something serious.

I'm thinking it's something with the exhaust? Idling it won't make the noise it's only when the accelerator is pressed. I'll most likely bring it into the garage but I wan to know am I OK driving it, apart from the noise is it causing any damage?

Is the noise present when revving the car while stationary?
But yeah, maybe a hole in the exhaust or the flex. It's an old car so not surprising.
Go get it checked with a local mech and get a quote.

So as you accelerate the engine revs up higher than normal before the power engages and pulls you along? I'd say your clutch is slipping and will need to be replaced. Not dangerous but will continue to deteriorate untill it fails leaving you on the side of you on the side of the road.

No if the engine is on and the car is parked there is no observable revving.

I have it booked into advanced pitstop in athlone to take a look tomorrow.

If it's not chucking down later I'll go underneath and see if I can spot anything out of the ordinary.

I don't think it's a slipping clutch, I've had this in my last car and while it would rev a lot the sound of the rev was normal. i.e. was like pressing accelerator when out of gear.

In this case power seems to be OK but just the sound is like a Honda civic with a modified exhausts. I'll see how it is on the drive home. Hoping its just hole in exhaust, wanting to change the car soonish and dont want to shell out money on it!

Just be aware that Advance are vultures and will want to replace half the car.

Last time I went to Advance they wanted to replace the whole exhaust system.
I had the report from the NCT stating just one part that needed replacing. Bunch of chancers

Apologies, misinterpreted you post. As said, be wary of Advance, they'll charge you a fortune if they can get away with it.

I find with Advance that if you know your stuff and tell them exactly what is needed they won't try anything on.

If you don't trust them use a local indy.

This is no longer a DIY issue, moved to main forum.

    Just to update.

Despite the rain and thunder I decided to have a look under the car and fairly quickly identified the problem. The exhaust coming from engine had detached completely from the muffler so essentially exhaust was being expelled just under handbreak area of the cabin which explained the vibration in the cabin. Seems like the bolts rusted off, so I found some suitable bolts and lined back up bolted together and issue solved.

There maybe some exhaust escaping because I'm not 100% of the seal given there was a bit of rust but noise levels etc have returned to normal and car driving as before.

Since I've bought this car I've put 140,000 miles (has now ~ 210 on it now) on it and it has cost me nothing in parts (apart from consumables like oil/pads/filters). I know there is a slight oil leak but since the car has nearly travelled the distance to the moon I can't gripe.

Cancelled appointment with Advanced Pitstop. :D

If there is a chance that exhaust is escaping, you'll want to get it looked at properly.

It will fail NCT on emissions if the exhaust system isn't functioning as it should, but more importantly, there's a chance that exhaust gas might be getting in to the cabin and that can have fairly serious effects on your health.

Agreed I will spend some more time on it during the weekend if it's a bit drier.

There is shielding above the whole exhaust system so any escaping fumes would most likely dissipate before being able to penetrate cabin which is water tight in any case. But I'll inspect further just to be sure. The exhaust itself does not have any holes and is in very good nick considering.
