    Hello,

Long term lurker. I've heard this phrase before:

    buying yourself out

What does this actually mean? Do you need to pay the IDF if you want to pack in the defence forces?

How much does it cost / what actually happens?

In short it means paying back funds to the state to reimburse them the cost of your training. The costs are not available on an open forum and depend on several different factors such as time left before the contract expires and in some cases, specific courses that may have been completed.

For a private they must serve an initial 5 year contract. If they wish to leave before that they must reimburse the state for the cost of their training.

For an Army officer who goes to college, paid by the state, they must serve X number of years per college year in order to guarantee the state a return on their investment.

For an Air Corps pilot, they are serve a 12 year contract upon commissioning. If they wish to leave, they will have to pay out.

It is absolutely necessary to ensure that the Defence Forces get a return on their investment.

It can cost thousands to buy yourself out depending on the training.

Or it could be a few hundred.
