If you're out of the country (as in permanently emigrated) and need to renew your driving licence do you have to fly home to go to their office?

You'll have to provide proof of address to the NDLS office. Would it not be hanider to transfer your licence to the new place your living?

And to answer the original question, yes you've to turn up to the office.

No need to keep an Irish licence if you're "permanently emigrated"

Yes, see if you can swap your Irish licence for a local one. It'll save you hassle next time.

I've no plans to drive in my new country while I would when I'd be back in Ireland and i think i can get it renewed for 10 years so not sure its majorly saving hassle to swap for a local one.

If you're not living in Ireland you are not entitled to renew the Irish licence. Obviously if you still have access to the Irish address on your existing licence, you can falsely renew it but that effectively invalidates the licence as it is obtained via a false declaration. If you ever had need to have a licence, such as in the event of an accident you might have difficulties. If you need to use an alternative address in Ireland to the old one then you might as well forget about it now as you would have to produce a utility bill or bank statement.

What country has a more complex licence exchange than making an appointment to travel back to Ireland anyway.

My understanding of the rules here in NL are that I'm entitled to keep and use my Irish licence as long as it's valid. But when it expires I must renew it for a Dutch one, as long as I am resident after that. So it works on both sides as such.

I imagine the rules are the same for wherever the OP is, unless outside the EU. Even if they don't plan on driving.

You would renew your license at the place of residence...
