After 2 years your NCB lapses, and you start from 0. If you are insuring a car where you are going, some Irish insurance companies will honour the NCB you bring back.

Ahh that sucks, so I mite be better off just keep paying my insurance when I'm away ,
I'm moving to a city where I won't need to own a car,

It depends when your current policy runs out. If it's say, 6 months away, you would be under 2 years when you need to start again, assuming you return after 2 years. If it has already finished you could renew it for a year and you would only be 1 year without insurance when you come back, and your NCB would still be valid.

Check with your insurer if you can freeze the ncb if you come back to them when you return.
Or make sure your current policy remains in place long enough for the absence span to be less than 2 years.

Will you have a car when you return? If not add a month or so while you look for a car and get it insured.

    You could suspend the policy?

Basically means the cover is reduced to usually F&T and you will get most of the premium back at the end of the year.
