Both 9ft. Similar price approx €7400. Kneverland tarrup one is 200 more.. Malone looks very well built but the unfoldable frame make changing blades a difficult task. What ye think?

I presume they're mounted at that price, any mounted mower over 8' the bed tends to warp. I've one here with a slight bend in the bed. Would a claas Kuhn be better?

We have a kv 2424 here almost ten years no problems with it apart from the canopy frame. No more than a couple of hours with a welder strengthening it over the years.

    8f?
I always thought 8 ft/ 2.4m was enough to be hanging off one side. Only considering 9ft as it be ideal for baler and quicker topping. But is 9ft asking for trouble.

Remember someone saying before that the malone didn't leave a very clean cut. Taarup always had a good name.

Can safely say that if a farmer bought a tarrup mower, he would have a mower for life. Unless he tried to use it as a land leveller or for cutting sticks. Best mower on the market.

There all fairly pricy imo for what they are. You'd want to be cutting a lot of acres to justify that cost.

Anyone have experience of these mower caddys. Seem to be fairly popular in America and Aus. Would there be a market for them here.

I don't see much advantage in the mower caddy. Disc mowers are not very heavy, even with a conditioner on them. I wonder would they be any cheaper than a trailed mower? They would be easier to put on/take off, so would be a help if doing a lot of changing implements.

Would a 6ft or 7ft mower be worth getting over a topper for the finish

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 167 ✭✭ted_182

The centre mounted mower is shaft driven to the bed where as the other one is belt driven which can slip while cutting

Malone 8ft straight deal is €6000. Makes it good value.

No comparison between the standard of cutting between a mower and a topper. It stands to reason; your average topper has two rotors across say 7 foot width. With a disc mower, circa 6 discs across the same width. The mower will follow the contours of the ground better and can generally cut down to a lower level. A cleaner cut means a faster re-growth. The trash is spread out over the whole cutting width, so no clumps of stemmy grass.

There possibly is a place for a topper in rough, stoney ground, etc, however if you want to top grass in a field that could normally be mowed for silage or hay, the disc mower is best option, IMO.

FMP mower should be cheaper than that, it has a comer bed, the same as the malone

Yeah, I was looking at a secondhand tarrup 8' during the week at a farm machinery dealer they wanted 3.5k for it. They didn't know what age it was and it has a good bit of surface rust, I'd say it never saw the inside of a shed. Mad money for what it was. Someone put a link on here last week for a claas 46 baler up north in spotless condition 2.7k sterling no comparison between the two machines for almost similar price.

Bought the malone. At 8ft it's good value. Looks very well made in comparison to the tarrup. I thought 9f a bit much supported on one side only. No way i was going to spent €4250 more just for a centre mounted version at 9ft

The Malone looks heavy, does anyone else think they are too heavy, or is it just me? I think they have the 9ft with conditioner rated as needing 130hp to drive it.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I've a trailed one here easy pull I'd say a 100 hp would walk with it they are not top repair as stated tho so I'll be going back to john deere again I'd say

Fully servicable from the top. So they say. I presume serviceable is more than a blade change. No need to split mower for bearing change.

Thats the exact reason i bought it. It looks heavy and well built. Running it with 97 hp so weight not too much of an issue.

Even compared to my old kuhn 8ft i sold, the malone looks alot stronger. Time will tell......

They aren't a top repair if a gear breaks you'll have to take the bed off

Spoke with Michael Malone. Individual bearings are replaceable from the top no need to split.

More serious work will require a split. Like most others.

Michaels phone no is on his website.

Not too often you can speak directly with the man in charge. One of the reasons for me buying was the modular design and the ability to change the bearing easily. Would have been a deal breaker otherwise.
