I paid 120 last year. That was for sausages rashers chops loin bacon hams legs and the rest. My only regret was not getting pudding but no guarantee that it would be the blood from my pigs

    €120 for your own pig?
Thinking about getting 1 to feed here, would it take up much freezer shelf space? (A lamb takes 2 shelves)

400 sounds awful dear. 120 for butchering. Think it was 40 for slaughter. We had 2 so it filled a medium sized chest freezer.

Do you mean you supplied your own pig and then 160 after that

Yes my own pig we fed it ourselves.
We fed it fruit and veg we got from local super valu and some barley. I wouldn't like to just buy a butchered pig. But 400 sounds ok money for that

We get two killed and butchered each time.

    €20 a head to slaughter.

€120 to butcher, cure, vac pack, blast freeze. No pork cuts all cured. No puddings. That does both.

    All registered facilities.

Ours are reared on a mix of scraps from the house, barley, pig fatter and beef nuts.
They have a shed and roam outside in a fenced in area.
Kids named the current two "Milly & Molly"

Cos more than likely that butchered pig was stuck in a shed force fed meal. The pigs I had got the best of fruit and veg and 1/3 of an acre to rummage around.

Do you need a pig number to get a pig slaughtered in a registered facility?

    Yes.

But getting a back yard herd number is very simple, just provide the basic husbandry requirements and the inspection is basic.
Shelter from weather, dry bedding, feed and water trough, OK to fill water with hose - no need for plumed drinker. Secure area, Rodent proof food storage, know a local vet to call if needed. Very basic stuff.

Took 4-6 weeks from first call to having the number, no charge, tags are a few euro each.

They are great craic. I used to stand watching them eating and rummaging around. Go into a fruit and get shop or a supermarket and ask them for the fruit and veg that's left over. Plus the household leftovers (NO MEAT) and a couple of bags of rolled barley. Then they are cheap to fatten. They will not be massive but very tasty

Dad always reared a couple of pigs every second year until the need for a pig number came about. Must get a form and apply for the number.

A butcher in my area kills pigs for people without a herd no., pig is killed in butchers herd no. by arrangement with the department of agriculture, he just keeps a register of who supplied pigs with their address and phone no.
He charges €80 to kill a pig for bacon or pork, no sausages. A pig will yield twice as much meat as a lamb. I get pork burgers instead of sausages.
