The prison island nation of Qatar

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/dutch-woman-held-in-qatar-on-adultery-charges-after-reporting-she-was-raped-a7076931.html

A 22 year old Dutch woman who was on holidays in Qatar in March has not been allowed to leave Qatar after she reported to police that she had been raped.
The woman will find out this coming week if she will be charged with adultery when she claims she was drugged and raped.

This is the same nation that takes the passports of poor migrant workers from countries like Nepal so they can't leave. Up to 4,000 of such workers are expected to die so Qatar can host the 2022 World Cup.
In March of this year, the UN gave Qatar one year to end forced labour.

The country has laws that allows it to put atheists to death, Muslim homosexuals also face the death penalty as Sharia permits, but sure then it is rather lax in stopping it's citizens from funding terrorist organisations like ISIS.

So like the 22 year old Dutch rape victim has found, Qatar is not a holiday destination, it is a hell hole, but the west calls this nation an ally.
Maybe a case of keep your friends close and your enemies closer?

OK it is not an island but a peninsula but still a prison...

She deserved to be raped because of her choice of holiday destination?

Not "deserved" but certainly it could be expected that a woman there would have little more rights than a dog, a simply Google of the country with the words womens rights would tell you that.

You've changed your position in 7 minutes flat. Now instead of deserving to be raped, she should only have expected it.

    Progress.

It's a twisted, backwards country run by morally bankrupt men but they have a lot of oil and lots of cash so they're our pals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,237 ✭✭✭mcmoustache

These ****ty countries are worse than the south africa that became a pariah state.

Unfortunately, as super furry alluded to, we want their dirty dollah so we put up with their shít.

    It's pretty rotten.

I can't change it but the least I can do is not go there and give them my dollah. People who voluntarily go there spending money are perpetuating this and they should feel bad.

Bollocks, so you are saying that women shouldn't travel because these cun ts can't control themselves, maybe the US or Russia should be bombing these stoneage bastads and stealing their Oil instead of worrying about North Korea

I don;t know if you can see the irony in your comments, but this is the type of tinking that has these backward places the way they are.

I hope you never have to experience somebody you know recover from rape, it's horrible and anything but deserved.

Youre comments on this matter are sick.

I was surprised that this story hadn't even been in the Dutch media since yesterday. But I suppose the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here didn't want to be shouting it from the roof tops.

Besides it being a humiliating situation for the young woman, I find it pretty disappointing about Qatar. For a long time it seemed (to me anyway) that Qatar was a far more liberal and progressive place than its neighbours. eg. Not like Bahrain who were locking doctors up who were helping wounded protestors and support against ISIS etc.

But that has now all unravelled. Starting with them getting the World Cup and the mistreatment of foreign workers building stadiums. And now this.

He's right about not going there in the first place though. You need a serious screw loose to think that Qatar is a appropriate "Holiday" destination for anybody that isn't a devout Muslim. And its one of the better country's in that region to visit.

The woman's (Laura) 'court case' was today. She'll be allowed to leave Qatar once she's paid a fine of about €750. She was also given a suspended jail sentence, but I don't think she'll be in a rush to get back to Qatar anytime soon.

The accused man was sentenced to 140 lashes. 40 for alcohol consumption and 100 for sex outside of marriage. No rape charges. Go figure.

It really is savage treatment of this poor woman. Keeps their crime stats in good shape though. FIFA will love that.

Qatar seems like the kind of the place the Khaleesi would have her dragons burn to the ground.

actually that sentence is probably better punishment than a white Olympian would have received in our enlightened western society.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,761 ✭✭✭✭RobertKK

Well that was a sentence befitting what a disgrace Qatar is.

Not that I'm defending the Qatari way of doing things, but the Guardian's article had some more to the story:
Some Dutch media queried her account after it emerged over the weekend that her travelling companion had admitted to working as a prostitute. The woman’s mother confirmed that her daughter had converted to Islam, which the Dutch foreign ministry said was a “complicating factor” in the case.

Qatar isn't a place I would consider for a holiday anyway. There is hardly a shortage of places to holiday in the globe that you would choose Qatar. This isn't a story of just any old girl being singled out in any old place. Those who paint that picture are being disingenuous in their rush to right-on internet liberal outrage.

These places have good old fashioned Iron age laws. I believe you need female three witnesses or one male witness for a rape charge.

Still, 140 lashes is not exactly getting off scott free. He'll be physically scarred for life.

Meh...the "lashes" in Islam are rarely the real thing. I've actually seen it in Nigeria about 20 years ago, looked a bit like this.

How can those savages just stand around and look on when the man is being tickled like that whilst fully conscious. :P

I think there are probably variants of this punishment in various circumstances in various states.

It does look rather comical in the case of that man.

Your wan in 50 shades of Grey must have committed worse crimes...

There are many places in the world that are very dangerous depending on your ethnicity, sex or sexual orientation.

4 willing male witnesses or the rapist confesses.
