Drilling through cane (furniture)

Finding it hard to drive screw a pilot hole through a cane sub-rail of a chair seat, so I thought I'd drive a pilot hole first. Any precautions as its not mine! I don't have 'screw bits' to drive the screw with a drill. Is cane particularly hard?
All advice appreciated by a complete amateur.

If it's two pieces of wood you are joining then drill a full size hole in the first piece and a pilot hole in the second, if it's just one piece you are putting a screw into then a pilot hole will do , cane is very hard and is prone to splitting
