I feel like a child asking this and should know better as I'm 36 and my friend is 37!
How do you handle a friend who's become bitter? Is there any way of maintaining a previously good friendship with someone who persists in negative commentary about people who have a different life to the one they lead?

Just gently point things out to her when she is plainly wrong about someone. My mother would be very negative. Loves a bit of a give out about everyone and anyone. I just always point out an alternative view.

You're not going to change her. Accept her for who she is, but don't be drawn into her misery either.

I find it very hard to deal with people like this. We can all have our bad days when we give out about somebody/something but we're general only leaving off a bit of steam. However when it's persistent I find the only thing you can do is offer your own opinion on the situation and try and explain that everything isn't black and white.

Can you give us a few more details or even some examples? Thanks.
