The Shallows

I really like this trailer. It looks like it could be a decent thriller, and it looks gorgeous. Out in the States at the end of June, out here in August.

PG13 over there, so I wouldn't expect to see much gore. It looks promising.
A mere 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills

Looks excellent! 'That' bit in the trailer! Whooa!

Great trailer, I'm looking forward to this. I hope it is a straight forward suspenseful, tense drama. If they keep it simple it could be great. I hope they don't go over the top and make it unbelievable.

Mind you it is hard to know with shark movies as there have been many, many ridiculous ones. I hope this isn't a case of a great trailer for a great set up in the film and then the ending just gets silly and unbelievable.

You mean, Jaume Collet-Serra is directing a movie that isn't an action movie starring Liam Neeson?

    He plays the shark.

He has a very particular set of gills; gills he has acquired over a very long career.

    Out on Wednesday.

I think trailer #2 gives a little bit too much away (grrr), so watch with caution. Hopefully some of it is misdirection.

Rte gave it a decent review 3.5/5 from Harry Guerin, who i find fairly spot on with his reviews most of the time.

Having trouble deciding between this, bourne & suicide squad at the weekend.

This is getting good reviews surprisingly. Don't think it will do that well though unfortunately.

I've had a cineworld unlimited card for 3 years now, and I try and see everything that comes out in the cinemas, more or less. I saw all 4 transformers movies, all 5 twilight movies, those nativity christmas movies, dirty grampa, whatever. You name a bad main stream movie and I probably saw it. The Shallows is the first and only time I've ever walked out of a film.

Fcuk you. Going to see it tonight. Only 86 minutes long. Want to be a right pile of sh!te. :(

Went to see it this evening. The suspense is tight enough with some great cinematography and aerial shots but the ending is in the title - shallow.

Ah c'mon, that wasn't a walk out movie. It was full of derivative set pieces. It made no sense, the acting wasn't the best but it kept me engaged to the end. Simple plot, minimal fuss. Decent b-movie schlock.

And crucially...86 minutes long. If you make a movie and it's not that great, do the audience a favour and cut as short as possible.

    Don't believe you.

I saw this last night and was gripped for the whole thing. Beautifully shot, nice score, good shark effects, decently acted by Lively.

    I was entertained, job done.

Anything with a decent budget and a Shark in it is must watch for me.

Shark-nado and Shark exorcist type films can do one.

It's entertaining, nothing amazing but it did have a few jump scares though you are expecting them. Bloody sound. Any film with decent budget and a great white shark attacking people has me up for it, not that there's been many.

I hated the whole social media/skype calls to home to give some tiny backstory to her. Screw that, just give me her trying to outwit a shark and I'll enjoy it more. There was probably budget reasons but the amount of green screen behind Blake Lively when she is just sitting on the rock, no action, was odd.

Decent - solid overall. I skimmed a US review a few weeks back that wasn't very favourable. Very good on a sensory/tactile level, e.g. stepping on that bastard coral to
her squeezing the sand at the end.
A few nods to Jaws, including some of the night stuff.

    I mean, of course
she was going to get her medical degree - the DIY surgery, her mother, etc.

I'm not familiar enough with sharks to know whether their behaviour can be repeatedly aggressive. This one was turned up to 11 mental and had a fine set of teeth to boot. Undoubtedly some creative licence going on, including
lining up for the final strike,
    but who cares, really?

Now, obviously that seagull should be up for an Oscar.

I genuinely loved this. Lots of silly fun and I thought Lively did a good job. Would rewatch!

I like this one, it has many good shots.

It had a decent performance by Lively but it was bloated with too much boring backstory and slowmo.

I swear I wouldn't have been surprised if the seagull was shown with the family on the beach at the very end.

Great fun and well shot. Wasn't mad about
the manner of the shark's demise
but overall it was very solid.

It was laughable. Wouldn't it have been more interesting to have
her outwit the shark and manage to find a way to get to land without having to have an elaborate and over CG kill?

Interesting is not exactly the point of this type of film.

They must have saved a tonne of money on not needing 'extras' or people for crowd scenes !! There couldnt have been more than 8 people in the whole film

I have only just got around to watching this. In my opinion it was great. It really ratcheted up the tension well. I would happily watch it again.

Watched this the other night. Really enjoyed it. Thought Blake Lively was very good and a genuinely entertaining film.

I usually enjoy these kinds of themes too.

Just finished this absolutely loved it was real sense of hopelessness in it , Seagull did annoy me a little that he wasn't eaten when she let him off

I watched this on a plane recently and had low expectations but really enjoyed it. Agree the
CGI killing of the shark at the end was overkill- literally
but it was good fun and yet tense too.

Maybe I will be slated for this but I really liked that it was a female-led movie that made absolutely no mention of her boyfriend or love life. :o Yes her back story was pretty cheesy, but another script could have seen her fighting to get off the rock to be reunited with the love of her life, and the last scene being their wedding () instead of the medical qualification thing.
