Dirty diesel in engine

    Hi all,

Long story short my car (insignia) is broke down, signal came up saying a service is required so I pulled over & turned off the engine. Wouldn't start again so i had it towed back to the nearest garage. They reckon there is dirt in the fuel tank and it needs to be drained out & cleaned & a new filter put in.

Question I have is how much would this usually cost & is it something a main dealer should be doing as opposed any garage? Iv'e been quoted €450. Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

I would imagine the 450 includes the towing fee?

The towing was 200 yards with a rope so doubt it. I know the guy that pulled it well & is a friend of my brothers so if i got any charge for that it would be surprising. Just lucky where it broke down, i was literally able to run up to the garage & point at my car through the window.

€450 to drain a tank and change a fuel filter is some rip off. An hours work.

I was thinking the same but seen as I wouldn't know where to start myself I wasn't sure. Problem now is if I do move it ill have to have it towed which is going to cost me.

OP id get a friend or someone you know to tow it to a mechanic , 450 for a tank drain and filter is crazy money . 20-30 quid for filter + 60-90 mins labour should add up to no where near 450 :)

Well if it was including a breakdown/towing charge then it wouldnt be too bad, did you ask the garage for a breakdown of the work?

Cheers for the advice lads, i'm going to call them and ask for a breakdown of the quote first & see what they are charging what for. To be honest I am a bit surprised that there is dirty diesel anyways. Is there any possibility that it could just be a sensor that's faulty & not letting the car turn on or am i being too naive about it?
