Noticed the car shaking and a few minutes the engine light came on. Any ideas what this could be? Would it be okay to drive 20km to mechanic?

    Thanks

Possible spark plugs or coil pack.

    Sounds like it's miss firing?
    Down on 3 cylinders?

The dipstick was coming out dry even though the oil light wasn't on. I've put some oil in it now , shaking seems to have reduced (could be wrong) but engine light still on.

I'd be inclined to either get the mechanic come to you or put it on a truck to the mechanic. Hard to know how much damage has already been done and how much more could be done driving it 20km.

If low oil or none it possible done too much damage already.

    May need a new engine

With the issues you describe, no oil, EML on and shaking it's hard to guess what the issue is but tbh you should probably not drive it that far.

Wait, wait...did you take the dipstick out while the engine ran? It's not uncommon for it to come up "dry" or nearly so, the oil is circulating. Check again with the engine off and cold, you may have overfilled (it is a BAD thing, the crankcase might froth the oil up letting the engine run unlubricated).

Thanks for the replies everyone. Brought it to the mechanic and it just needs a new coil. He checked the engine compression and it's fine. Waiting on part delivery now should be done in a couple hours.

Edit: brought it to a nearby mechanic rather than do the 20km my usual guy.
