I don't think VW ever did any good car.

Their cars sell and are popular, because people think they are good.
And that's the biggest mystery for me, how did VW ever managed to achieve that.

The way I hear some people gush over their 1.9 tdi golf or Passatt always make me throw up a little in my mouth. Overheard some fella in the shop today saying things like "she must be some rocket, Jesus if I had that kinda power id never keep it between the ditches"...The lady he was talking to was agreeing, saw her get into a 2004 Passatt tdi ten minutes later. Jesus 110bhp would suck the face off ya in a bend alright.

    Not even "tdREDEYE" at that....

So, I take it you have a 97 Vento that refuses to die?!

My grandfather had a Vento. It was the most awful thing to drive.
It's as if the salesman said to him: "Oh, is that wheezy 1.4 petrol golf too lively for you sir? Well, how about we throw a big ugly boot on it to tame it a little bit?!"

I'm not saying VW are great, but I definitely doubt they're measuring themselves against the 97 Vento on each new car they build!

I suppose lots of people (including myself) have a feeling of reliability with VW because we've owned a few models that have done huge milage with little trouble, returned good milage and then a decent resale value at the end. For the average Joe that covers most bases, the average Joe doesn't need 240bhp.
Having said that when I was in my VW years I had a Renault 19 diesel which performed equally as well as the Passat all except for resale values.

The whole "what's the best car" debate on an open forum like this is pointless because we all have such wide ranging needs, I mean, that 97Vento that op is hard over would be useless to me, I need a Vehicle to pull a trailer, caravan and return good mpg.

On a side note I think the vento was the ugliest car VW produced and I'd imagine driving a 1.4petrol version would be a bit like going back to an ass and cart.

I bought a new VW Jetta 1.6 diesel Highline back in 2011. It did around 60mpg, was very comfortable, almost as quiet as a petrol model, had a huge boot for the clubs etc, never gave an ounce of trouble but nah......you're right, it wasn't great, not a patch on the Vento.

OP - what model Ford would compare to the '97 Vento?

I'd say the Orion would be the closest.

1981 escort estate 1.6 petrol (naturally aspirated)

You are dead right, the mk2 GTI, golf R, corrado, mk1 GTI, split screen van, karmann all pure rubbish.

It's funny how people will slag off the vw fanboy who loves his tdi Passat because it's a vw, I think it's worse (and ignorant) to hate a car model and not give it a chance because of a brand, essentially you are a car snob who doesn't have the ability to see past a car brand.

I'm no fan of fiats but it wouldn't stop me buying a 20v coupe just because it's a fiat

Having driven one I'm quite taken, 140bhp 2.0 4*4, nice drive. Bit expensive though.

Pathetic thread. You could argue the same for any of the manufacturers if you were bitter enough.

Picked up a 161 Passat cc earlier this year. After 22k it told me to pull over it was low on oil, there is a fault with the instrument cluster display where it looks like a clear sticker was left on it. Lacquer peel on the edge of the spoiler.

Upgraded to the new 190 engine and made the huge mistake of getting manual. The car will cut out every chance it gets if you are not in the exact correct gear at the correct revs.

I have been a Passat lover for years but they seem out of their depth.

For some reason Irish people perceive VW as an upmarket brand simply because it's German.

VW literally means 'People's Car'. Can't get more pleb than that.

It was also commissioned by Hitler which explains a lot about its drivers.

Meh Adolf was far more a Mercedes man. :D

Volkswagen was pre war a general German description for an affordable family car and lots of family type cars from different brands were seen and advertised as such. In English and today VW might be named Familycar. So you'd have the Familycar Golf Gti and so forth.

IMH VW have made some great cars in their time. They practically invented the Hot Hatch* for a start and they always felt like they had lovely build quality to them. I had an extended go in a Golf Gti a while back and yeah it wasn't that quick and it was more than a bit porky and you could feel the heft in the bends, but by god was it well bolted together. Hewn from granite and it looked the mutts nuts too. A very nice place to be.

*yeah, yeah there were early kinda hot hatches but the Golf nailed it as a package

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Sure you could take a boring Passat as a representation of the entire VW group just like you could take the Honda Accord diesel to represent Honda. I've had some great VWs/Audis over the last few years never had any serious issue with them at all. A mixture of 1.8t 20v's. In various forms and mk2 golfs. The biggest issue I had was I needed to change a window reg in the a3. My 530d on the other hand broke my heart but I'm not going to judge an entire brand from one car from one model from one era etc.

Too often I hear oh I wouldn't buy one of them Johnny down the road bought one and within the year it blew up. Johnny never serviced the thing!

Well first line is nonsense and the last is fairly obvious. It's Advertising. VAG spend an absolute fukton on it. Their marketing team is fairly excellent at arranging product placement or "promotional consideration" too. You'll see their products in hilarious abundance (in particular Audi) in everything for Captain America to Modern Family.

Their spend in automotive journalists ensure they're kept towing the Ingolstadt party line and winning awards. At least twice this year I've seen autoexpress* give a VAG product less than fours stars, only to have it amended up within an hour. I shocked to see a paragraph on quality concerns and some of Audi's reliability scores (59th out of 62 manufactures) on the upcoming A6. It didn't last long before it was excised either.

VW bank massively helps as well.... Which I'm convinced is going to go bang in a spectacular way some day.

*Probably the most transparent VAG shill operation I visit.

It's deluded fanboys that are the real problem. That spout out such crap they haven't a clue what they're on about. I often just nod and smile, knowing full well that's not how it works/blatant lies

As for the cars themselves, middlin

Cars are ultimately going to fail as times move, they get more modern and computerised. I think its because cars are getting made cheaper to make them available to more people, much like air travel. I also think because more and more electronics are crammed into them, there is more to go wrong. Just an opinion.

Anyway I think VW cars are decent. My family have had a 4 Passat's since 2007 and they never given a single issue. I'm even learning to drive in one. The only reason we are getting rid of them now is that the kids have their own jobs now and the folks want to get an Audi, BMW or Merc for varieties sake next time. That and the emission scandal has also annoyed my folks too, they are particular about how much fuel the car is using and emissions.

Pointless thread really, implying that VW don't still make good cars. They may not excel in any one area but VW deliver well rounded, desirable products that resonate with consumers. And that extends beyond soft touch plastics and door thuds. They may have engineering shortfalls in certain areas but show me a car manufacturer that doesn't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,192 ✭✭✭pcardin

it's just that their name Volkswagen does not really suit their price anymore, they're not that cheap and affordable to Volk. Due to recent quality issues and cheating scandal should be renamed to Arschwagen or maybe Schwanzwagen (judging by how the users drive them).

On my 3rd vw now. (Mk6gti). Previously had a passat and mk 5 golf. Absolutely brilliant cars. Never gave me a moments trouble and didn't look too shabby either. Not really sure what constitutes an excellent car in the op's mind. .......a veyron maybe? ? It's all relative anyway. I had a peugeot which had constant electrics problems and an almera which was reliable but boring as f##k. I'm close to forty now and only for the mortgage I'd be down to my dealer ordering a 162 "R". Having all that said I'm actually pretty open minded about cars and wouldn't consider myself brand loyal. Im just a Joe bloggs that has had good positive experiences with VW ......
