IIRC you get the movies in HD as part of the movies sub now.

When did this change come in do you know?

Would have thought more of a deal would have been made of it.

I can't remember exactly. It would be counterproductive to make too much of a big deal about it though - they still want to sell HD subs for the other benefits.

It was announced a while ago and I think it took effect from the start of June.

The standard of movies on Sky Movies is pretty woeful these days .
They repeat the same limited number of films over and over again .

I think the only real value for Sky Movies is through the On Demand section.

Will It happen to the Sky Sports channels in the future?

    Highly unlikely I would say.
The Sports channels are what make Sky most of its money.

I would say without a doubt probably within the next year.

That will be the end of the 'dream box', as the HD channels are hardware locked.

I've seen so many of those statements over the last 11 years & a new door will always open.

You'd think they'd do it straight away so. The loss of a 15 euro sub would surely easily be balanced by the extra subs due to piracy falling away.

agreed the HD sub is ridiculous in this day and age, it isn't even full HD to begin with.

If they lowered the price of the movie channels a bit more to compete with the likes of Netflix and dropped the HD sub completely, then maybe more people would rethink about getting sky movies.

This would be a great time for them to do this as Netflix are rising to 10 euros per month and they have really dropped the ball with movies over the past couple of months.

Thats true ,the picture quality of the Sky Movie channels is very poor.
SD is atrocious and HD is also poor .

Sky are now promising "New improved HD"
We’ve improved our systems to make sure that you never lose a pixel of quality. Sky has moved to a new format for our movie master files, giving us a third more pixels (2m vs 1.5m) and 4 times the number of colour shades (1024 vs 256 for each primary colour). This means sharper and more vibrant pictures for a better viewing experience.

The movie master files are currently in 1440x1080 ( 1,555,200 pixels) resolution, Sky are upping this to have them all native 1920x1080 ( 2,073,600 pixels). They are also moving from 8bit (256) to 10bit (1024) colour.

That explains why the movie HD channels look so poor

Will they also do this for the likes of Sky Atlantic?

I have all the Sky general channels (no sport, no movies) but have the HD pack so that I can watch Sky Atlantic in decent quality....

I also have Netflix which im barely watching anymore as all the movies are very old or crap and they seem to be releasing less decent tv shows compared to last year.... so im thinking of dropping Netflix real soon due to their price increase and stale content, cant access the USA netflix anymore either....

so if Sky dropped the HD pack completely, I probably would take up their movie package and watch it on demand..... but I ain't gonna do that till that HD pack is dropped....

If i was to drop the HD pack nnow, cancel Netflix and take up Sky Movies I would get the movies in HD but as I wouldn't have the HD pack then I would not get Sky Atlantic in HD etc...

Sky Atlantic HD decent quality ?
Very poor for a HD channel to be honest ,as for Sky Atlantic SD ,its diabolical.

Will they remove the charge for Sky Atlantic and other entertainment channels ,perhaps they will .I cant see them removing the HD charge for Sports though.

It is a disgrace that one has to pay extra for HD channels ,it should be standard by now.

As I understand it, in the UK at least, you only have to pay extra for Sky Sports in HD. Every other pack has had HD as standard since 1st June. But I thought that change didn't apply here (yet) as our price increases are now on a different timetable to UK and have been for a couple of years.

that would save alot of people here 15 euros per month. The only reason I have the hd pack is to watch Sky Atlantic in much better quality than the terrible SD version.

Also are the boxsets tied to the HD pack or do they come as standard with a general subscription?

Yes, you have to pay a HD sub to avail of the boxsets.

Unfortunately I had a feeling that was the case. I use the boxsets alot so wouldn't like to lose that function.

Sort of. In the UK they have the Family pack, this is more expensive than variety (£5 iirc) and includes HD and Boxsets.

From the 8/7/16, they are rebranding Sky Movies to Sky Cinema, which will come in HD as standard.
