RTE rejects Muslims cleric request for prayer

For once I'm happy with the decision from RTE.
Bad enough having the Angelus still played out but my favourite part of the clerics comment is this:

Expressing disappointment at the decision by RTÉ, Dr Selim said: “In Muslim countries the commencement of the period of fasting and its end is marked with a prayer call chanted through load speakers placed on the top of the minarets. It is also aired through radio and TV channels.”

    Yeah. In Muslim countries.
Maybe we should say "sure, as soon as you start blaring the Angelus in Muslim countries then we can".

I would be willing to bet this wouldn't even compute for the guy. We're still trying to slough off the last dregs of another regressive superstition, we don't need another even worse one. Ktnxbai.

It just shows though why RTE would want to be a little careful of creating the Angelus precedent. It's a very odd scenario to be broadcasting calls to prayer on a publicly funded broadcasting service.

I hope he sues them. Either all religions get air time or none do. Hopefully this will spell the end of the Angelus too :)

I'd be happy for my taxes to fund his request to live in a country that's facilitates his societal requirements.

If the country espouses to be secular than his complaint has validity. Why should Catholics have the Angelus and nothing for our Islamic brethren?

    PC blandness?

ooh the big bad Catholics and thier bells. I'm in a secular state atm, the church bell rings every hour, the town hall every half hour and they are loud. Lots of muslims going about their business not a mosque for miles. Nobody died.

    Sad story, good story

    Damm protestants and thier bells..

Last time this came up, somebody pointed out that RTE have already said something laughable along the lines of the Angelus not being specific to any religion but simply a moment of spirituality and reflection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,639 ✭✭✭andekwarhola

Always a weird circular thinking on these threads: we are secularists that have a gripe with Irish Catholicism (which is organically declining at a rapid rate anyway) but to prove this - and to align ourselves firmly along smug ideological lines - we demand airtime for even nuttier religious types, many of whom are inimical to our way of life.

One can only assume the needs of ideological addiction are more pressing than intelligence and common sense.

Which is a statement that is basically offensive to everyone. It's lying to people who would prefer a secular state that doesn't try imposing any particular religion and it's demeaning the religious ritual that is the Angelus.

They've managed to really just come up with the worst of both worlds with that wishy washy nonsense.

That's like saying 'It's not Mass. It's an open to everyone get together and reflection just called mass. Also we have replaced communion with chocolate biscuits.'

Not gonna lie, have you listened to Muslim prayer? It's melodic as hell and would make for a lovely change from the DOONGG DOOONGGG DOOOONG DOOOONGGG sh1te we have to put up with.

No way, wouldn't even come close to the anger vented at the Angelus.

Hey lads, you know they also broadcast Mass on RTE right? What does everyone think of that? *runs away from thread*

Is there even one person on the thread who actually wants the Muslim call to prayer to be broadcast?

I think it's much more a case of pointing out double standards - the reasons for telling Dr. Selim to f**k right off with his idea of broadcasting a Muslim call to prayer apply to the angelus also.

I dunno, the Angelus doesn't affect my life in any way at all, it actually lets me get the headlines on BBC before I switch over to RTE. A Muslim call to prayer wouldnt affect me in any way at all either. I don't see any need for it, but I certainly wouldn't be losing my **** over it.

The way they produced it, with all the shots of people pausing and looking off into the mid distance it's more like an advert for constipation medicine!

    Feeling bloated?... bong.

That or some kind of warning about going to your GP if you're suddenly struck with memory loss.

    Dear dr Selim,
There is a big hint in your statement- "In Muslim countries" and maybe if you feel so strongly about it perhaps you might find it more comfortable to live in one.

Catholicism is dying on the vine here. I doubt the Angelus will be on TV even in 15 years time. I agree though, I want both of them to fcuk off, not cosy up to one to annoy proponents of the other.

I think you'll find most peoples reaction in the west these days to 'Allah Akbar' being loudly shouted out in a public space is rarely anything other then 'duck and cover', as opposed to humming along with the melody.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,733 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

I agree though, I want both of them to fcuk off, not cosy up to one to annoy proponents of the other.

I don't think the cosying up is happening though, not really.

It's just pointing out double standards, like one mentioned earlier in favour of the angelus which is 'sure it's just a minute in the day, what's the problem'.

The people making that same argument for the broadcasting of Muslim call to prayer are doing so to annoy the others, for sure, but I don't think it's any kind of actual desire for any kind of call to prayer being broadcast.

I don't think this is a valid point. It's a predominantly catholic country.
At the end of the day this would never be allowed in a Muslim country (stand to be corrected) and I don't see the reason to have it introduced in a Catholic country.
Besides, the man is a bonafide idiot.
I would prefer to have the Angelus also removed however, if I had to chose between the two...
