Bought car, declaring it off the road

    Hi lads,

I bought a car last week, 27th of May to be exact. The car has no tax so as the new owner I am liable from the 1st of May (which is ridiculous)

Anyway, this is gonna be a weekend car and I dont plan on using it immediately. Maybe in a month or two (lets say August)

How exactly do I go about declaring it off the road so that I can only pay tax from August onwards?

Would be great if it didnt involve having to physically go to a motor tax office.

(Note I actually have the previous owners logbook, but I have already filled out the back).. If that makes any difference?

Ok so can I fill in the vehicle registration certificate number now or do I have to send it off and wait for it to come back in my name first?

Edit: sorry I get it now, i have to send it off and wait to receive the logbook in my name then declare it off the road all within 21 days of when I bought the car.

If you can get into the tax office, you can change ownership there and then with the log book and at the same time declare the car off the road. I have done this plenty of times.

Nice one, I think I'll do that on bank holiday monday as they seem to be open then!

I would be very surprised if they are open on a bank holidayMonday

I don't think that google take into account that it is a bank holiday here and just post the generic Monday to Friday times.

If you're signing it off the road won't it be from the start of July now because June has started so they won'tallow you to sign it for that?

Also, AFAIK when you go to back back tax they insist on you taxing it for at least 3 months at the same time.

Yeah really good question?... That link that was posted is very confusing.

On ine hand it says I can declare it off road from date of sale but then it also stipulates that the declaration cant be made for previous months??

.... Which I guess is why I came here for answers instead of the motortax website.

Pop into the tax office. They're normally AI at trying to give out helpful info if you go in with the right attitude. I know queuing up is a balls but sounds like those questions won't be answered here.

Enter the reg number on this every day

    https://www.motortax.ie/PSE/start.do;jsessionid=0aa0114730d8db786fa99899493e9c26f89074eb6dd6.e38PaNaSbh0RaO0NaN0Pe0?page=welcome

When you see that it's been "transferred to an individual" head in to the tax office and declare it off the road. You have 21 days from the date of sale to do so. The log book is not needed in the tax office to make an off the road declaration.

Ok but the form asks for a "vehicle registration certificate number" so I will actually need to wait to receive the log book back before making the declaration.

If you have the VLC (which the seller should have sent off), why don't you date the sale from the 1st June, get it straight off in tonight's post.

You've now got 21 days from the sale date to declare off the road. Keep checking Motortax.ie to see when it's transferred in to your ownership, then use the PIN Retrieval on the off road declaration section, and declare it off the road.

If it's already dated for the 27th May then you might just about have time to do the above, but could be cutting it a bit fine.

That thought did cross my head but I wasn't sure if crossing out or tipexing the existing date of sale (27/05/16) and putting in today's date will be accepted by the registration office .. :-/

As you have been advised above send it now. It will be with them within 3 working days or so.

Then look up motor tax.ie and input reg and request pin. Once it shows change of ownership no need whatsoever in going into office.

This can be done before vlc has even been received by you.

Take a photo or copy of all sides of vlc before it's sent. If it's lost the number on front top right is very important to have as makes it easier.

You don't need to fill that in.

That doesn't, or at least didn't work for me any time I purchased a car and then directly declared it off the road. I always had to go to the tax office. It worked when I was declaring a car off the road that I owned for a period of time and which I had previously declared off the road in the tax office. Maybe things have changed since though?

Tippex will be accepted. I sometimes have made a mistake and had to use it. Just make sure there is no fines or speeding tickets picked up in those few days as they will go to the previous owner.

From the month in which it was sold, OP is still responsible for May!

Why would they want 3months back tax??

OP you have 21 days from date of sale to declare a car off the road, I'v managed to do it 3months after buying a car and getting the declaration backdated! (Might not always be lucky though)

No I meant when you go in just to pay back tax they don't allow you to just pay that without getting 3 months of new tax. Not sure if it applies when signing a car off the road though.

One of my friends car was out a few months and she had little money so she wanted to pay the back tax then and buy new tax the next month. They wouldn't take the back tax without issuing a new disk with at least 3 months on it.

Is the car currently taxed? you normally cant declare the car off the road unless it's taxed, Is it different if it's just changed hands?

That I don't know - only ever declare brand new cars off the road - takes overnight from the off road declaration being made to being able to tax them in that case (without arrears).

Yes you have 21 days from date of sale to either tax it or declare it off the road.

If you are genuinely not going to use the car in public for a couple of months just change the 5 (May) to a 6 (June) and post off the VLC on the 27th of this month.
Then, as already mentioned, keep an eye on motortax.ie and as soon as it shows a change of ownership get ready to apply for a PIN number..
You have to wait for a new VLC to be issued (but not yet posted) before the system will give you a PIN number. This is because the PIN is the last 6 digits of the VLC number ,and your new VLC will have a different number than the previous owner's version.
At least this method looks a lot better than tippex-ing out almost the complete Date on the VLC.

Yeah I think I will go with this but there's no real need then to change the "5" to a "6"?

I assume the VLC should definitely be issued well within the 21 days counting from 27/05/16

I wouldn't count on it...especially with a Bank Holiday this weekend.
It should be OK, but if there's any sort of backlog (or your's gets lost for a few days).........

edit. As I said, if the car is off the road until at least next month then it would be more prudent to go with 27/06 as the change of ownership date.
Don't worry, if there's any problems you can always change ownership again (to a relative for example) and start the process again.
