Portugal advice

I am looking to head to Portugal for a week around August or September, this good weather has us wanting a break away. I am going to go into a travel agent on Saturday to see what they have available and to get some ideas.

I'm sure i can get just as good advice from members here who where in Portugal before or regulars. I was looking at destinations, Lagos, Albufeira or Alvor. Ideally i would like a nice hotel that is within walking distance to a beach and location that has a good night life for pubs and restaurants. I would prefer to book this myself as it will be a lot cheaper so anyone that has been before who can recommend a hotel id be very grateful.

I recently posted in Waterford form for a weekend and got some great advice so here's hoping :)

Just check them yourself on tripadvisor. It was always apartments we stayed in, not hotels.

I have been over to Portugal a few times now both as a couple and also with small children. We went to Carviero which is about 30 mins past Albufera and 1hr from Faro airport. Any of the hotels are nice and if booking on booking.com you can get a decent price. Whatever you do, make sure you arrange transfers as we got caught out the first time we travelled and have to pay €100 for a taxi

I enjoy Lagos, not too large or busy and plenty of beaches within walking distance. I hear its really nice around the Marina area..Enjoy..

I've been to the Algarve and stayed in a good few places and would recommend the western part as it has the nicest scenery, lovely beaches and it is nice and quiet.

I would personally not like to stay in Albufeira myself. Alvor is nice although it is where José Mourinho holidays so judging by your username, you might want to avoid!

I most recently stayed near Praia da Luz, very close to Lagos and I have to say, it was extremely nice. If you are unable to rent a car, this might not be an option for you.

We stayed in pestana dom joao hotel in alvor, right on the beach and with beautiful big grounds and pool so it is never crowded. Slightly outside Alvor, used to walk in town in the evening and then take a cheap taxi back to hotel at night. Lovely seafood restaurants in Alvor. We visited Lagos as well, founded very pretty and bigger than Alvor.

I really love Alvor, can be a bit pricy for accommodation at some times of the year

My old man booked this crowd for airport transfers there in April and they were happy with the service http://www.yellowfishtransfers.com/en/home

Love lagos, has the right balance imo. Not too small, not too touristy. Just back a couple of weeks ago and hoping to go again in September. Highly recommend it.

I'd recommend the villa gale hotel. Not cheap but really good imo. Great breakfasts and the beach is across the train tracks. Alternatively, the boa vista golf resort has quality apartments and lots of facilities on site if it happens to rain.

Lagos is great. We rented a private apartment.

Got bus from airport to bus station in Faro and then walked up the road to train station and got train direct to Lagos. Cost about €10 each rather than pay for private transfers.

    Didn't really like Albufeira.

We booked the real marine residence in olhao for July through lowcostholidays.ie

Portuguese friends recommended as far east of faro as we could get. Has more locals than foreign tourists.
