Strangely we don't seem to have a thread for this this year, but have seen a few mention they are running.

Whose in? How is everyone set? Looks like it's going to be a scorcher. :)

Super, I'm marshalling - scorcher works for me :D

I'm in. Not sure how I'll do but sure I say that every race. With the training I've been doing I feel confident enough but the weather could put a spanner in the works so we'll see on the day! It could go either way!

I'm in but am expecting a dreadful day out. Training has exactly been...well...going...

I'm in too! Hopefully it won't be too hot! Not expecting much time wise for myself so just hoping to enjoy the day! And finish in one piece!

I'm in! In the fast joggers section this year! It's a great event and the atmosphere along the run is enjoyable, especially along the Stillorgan road and in Donnybrook where I find there are plenty of kids cheering you on!

But I'm starting to dread it a bit since the weather turned so fab. The thoughts of standing out in that sun for almost an hour before the race, then trying to run in the heat in a city. I did my last long run on Monday morning and the heat was serious and it was tough. I feel I've been putting in the work this last while, but I think the heat on the day will drain me!

Those firemen better be out in Donnybrook with the hoses! Disappointed they haven't been out the last few years.

Everyone's afraid to start a thread because it always descends into posters going mad about the word 'marathon' being in it, capri pants, walkers, packets of Monster Munch etc :):)

I'm in! I love this race! It's on around the same time as Primavera music festival, so I've missed it twice because of that, but I'm in this year.

I had hoped to be in really good shape for it and to run a PB, but it's really only this week and last week that my ankle has been feeling 80-90% better (have been having issues since early March). I'll do my best though! I'm a bit worried about the heat, but the Terenure 5 Mile last month was warm and I did ok there, so fingers crossed!

Good luck everyone running, and thanks to everyone marshalling!

Nooooooooooo, the real problem here is the name of the event. I've asked for it to be changed but surprisingly I didn't receive a response.

Also the posters who I thought were male but are here and running.

Last year it was raining, so they didn't bother, but they were there in 2014. Fingers crossed they're out! Also, there were loads of kids with water pistols at the UCD flyover in 2014, which was nice and refreshing!

For anyone that's done it before, any tips on the route? Is there any big hills or climbs or tough sections? Never done over 5km race before so getting worried!

The toughest section for me is the long in and out stretch from 4k to 6.5k. It seems never ending! But my trick is to not look too far ahead and before I know it I've hit the turn and I'm on my way back to town.

In fairness the route isn't too bad. The first km is quite congested with groups of walkers strolling 5 abreast! Try not to start out too fast at the start. Try not to waste too much energy weaving about trying to avoid the walkers and the groups of slower people, you'll tire yourself out and you won't really get much further. Just go with the flow. I learned last year to seek out someone going a similar pace to myself and slotting in behind them! I find the crowd has thinned out a bit by 2km and you can begin to get into your own pace then.

There isn't really any hills as such on the course. I find the climb at 4.5km and 6.5km as you come up from under the UCD flyover to be tough. I actually think there little climb as you go from Morehampton Rd onto Leeson Street up as far as the canal. But maybe it's just cos tiredness is setting in at that stage.

There are great supporters along the route! Plenty of kids cheering and giving hi-5's! There is a band or a singer at each km marker. I sometimes feel teary when I look at some people's t-shirts doing the WMM in memory of a loved one.

It really is an enjoyable race (bit of an oxymoran there!) but the crowds and the atmosphere do really make it!

Also, remind yourselves that by the time you turn you're WAY over halfway and you can just push hard all the way into town. The Leeson Street stretch is about 900m, but it doesn't feel as long because of the crowds.

Re the course: I like the route. There's a bit of a drag before you get to the dual carriageway (is it Nutley?) and then a drag up the dual carriageway to past the flyover, but then there's a downhill, and then you're on the home stretch.

There's music, and cheering crowds, and the firemen spraying you with water etc to keep you cool.

    Enjoy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 437 ✭✭FIFA2004

Thanks Sunnydayz, helenAnne and tfgr! I was thinking I'd try go very easy for the first few km's and then try push on for the rest when I'm left with a distance I'm more comfortable with to go! Sounds like the congestion will help with that anyway :) looking forward to it now, have never done a race with supporters!

I'd better not mention the laughs we've had at the race in the past, reckon these entrants are Nigellas and Thomasinas :D

I'm hoping to run this race Monday, but stupidly forgot to collect my number :o - and won't be able to get to the RDS tomorrow. I've made an appeal on facebook and hope somebody will be able to collect it! My own stupid fault

I love this race, I always start with the runners so it's a smooth run though I struggle at 5 - 7 kms. I never strive for PB here, I love the atmosphere.

Best of luck to You all here!

Looking forward to this. Did it last year in runners section and got a 10k pb but have a feeling that this year will be a lot slower due to a combination of easing the foot off training since HM in march plus the heat- did 4k yesterday slow enough and the heat was a killer - prefer running in cold rain :) Hope the firemen are out!

I've never been, but can anyone recommend a place to view along the route with somewhere to park nearby?

Well done all. Fantastic support en route.

As predicted, the hot weather destroyed me, much slower than last year. I thought the rain might be down for the race (optimistically) but it cleared up just before the start. I found it a real mental battle from 3-7k in the heat.

Anyone know why there was a 10 min delay to the start time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,776 ✭✭✭This Fat Girl Runs

Delay caused by a 'technical glitch' is what I heard the announcer say.

I PB'd by nearly 6 minutes but man it was tough. Weather could have done with switching around! If only it had been sunny before the race and rainy during! Great atmosphere as always, fantastic support and well organized. Kudos to all the volunteers!

Well done on the PB, I was a little slower than I had hoped for today but I think the heat definitely affected me. Not helped by the extra wait at the start.

I found the organisation a bit off today compared to previous years. Long queue for the baggage drop, which did not seem to be moving at all. I ended up running with my bag on my back - also did not help.

Ice packs at the end were great! I really needed that.

That's unfortunate re the bag drop. I was lucky I guess and got there when there wasn't much of a queue. I did notice a lot of people running with their bags on their backs. Can't have helped in the heat!

Ice packs were awesome though it took me ages to get it working! :P

Really enjoyed this smashing weather for a run. The smoking at the start was a bit annoying. It was like being in a snug back in the 80s.

Well that was fcuking horrendous. Seriously not able for the heat. That lovely rain before the start was just a touch too early for me.

The fact that I haven't been able to train really really showed and didn't enjoy it as a result and was passed out by quite a few joggers. No suprises there really.

Ah well. It is what it is. Hope you all enjoyed the day :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,676 ✭✭✭thunderdog

I heard that the delay was due to water getting into the sensors or whatever they are in the starting line Matt. I'd imagine that was a stressful few minutes for the organisers having 35000 people waiting on you to fix it!

Had a great day!!! The heat was tough to cope with though! Thank god for the water stations. Thanks to everyone that volunteered or came out and supported! The support especially made the whole thing much easier :)

Spurred on by a shout-out of "Go marthastew" from the other side of the Dual carriage way I'm popping on here to say hello.... (thanks so much whoever it was)

Firstly, massive congrats to all who ran/jogged/walked/crawled today, a massive achievement in that heat! I know the rain before the start was a pain but conditions would have been way worse if it hadn't rained. I was happy for the volunteers and supporters that the sun came out but holy moly... I thought my head was going to catch fire, hot, hot, hot!
My third time running this race and I love it! A super 10K through the streets of Dublin for €19, wonderful organisation and the support along the route is so brilliant.... what more could you want (well maybe cooler weather but we can't have it all). Very unusual for the start to be delayed and we had a bird's eye view of the head-shaking and worried looks at the side of the start line... I imagine the pressure was enormous! I also queued for a little longer to drop off my bag, I think the downpour threw everyone off for a bit.

Special thanks to the stewards on the last stretch including Firedance :) Cabinteely parkrun were lucky enough to nab a few spots marshaling today, a really fun way to fundraise for our parkrun and who better to cheer you home than parkrunners? :D:D Crusaders were also out in full force cheering us on at almost every junction and they certainly shaved a few seconds off my time. I had a really great run, finished in a heap so I couldn't have gone any faster. I'm well off my PB but I'm definitely getting back to myself after illness/injury so I'm thrilled.

What a great day, well done to all :D

I was the same. I found the climb from under the UCD flyover not as bad as last year but from then on I thought I would never get to the turning point it seemed miles away compared the previous years!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,517 ✭✭✭Sunny Dayz

Well done to all who took part today and thanks to those who marshalled. Got caught in that awful downpour in the queue for the bag drop area which wasn't as well organised as last year, myself and a few others had to skip through a bit as it was taking forever! Thanks a mil to the lady behind me with a big roll of black bin bags sharing them out in the rain!! Threw my sunglasses in the bag, sun came out at the start line!!
It was a tough one out there, but not the intense sun from training this past week. Seeked out shade where I could. There were a few cool breezes but plenty of very warm air, I suppose that's city running for you, I run in the countryside.
Km 5-6 was a toughie, I thought I would never reach the turning point at Fosters Avenue.
Firemen in Donneybrook were well needed, I went right in for a good drenching!!!
Think I got in a minute quicker than last year so that should be a course best for me, and a couple of mins off by overall 10km pb.

Brilliant day out, great atmosphere (thanks Story Bud? for collecting my race number!).
I had a disastrous run, my times are getting longer and longer while my joints are aching more - when I got home I realised I've put on 4kg in weight, so I'll watch what I eat for a while and walk in the evenings.

Well done ladies, hope you have the feet up and the vino in hand!

I meant to post about this last night - did anyone notice at the gate into St Vincent's hospital a lady lying on a hospital bed at the gate waving to people. Fair play to her for doing that, I got all teary when I seen her. Don't know who she was or why she's in hospital but to go out that heat and cheer and wave on runners was amazing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 409 ✭✭Guess_Who

I shaved almost 3 mins off last year's time which I'm delighted with given the heat! Found Nutley Lane ok this year compared to last year when I almost crawled up.

Struggled from 6km - 7km and 8km - 9km mainly due to the heat. The firemen were a godsend!

Great day out all the same & hoping that with a bit of training & a few more races I'll be able to register as a runner next year.

Well done to all who got out & did it!

Well done, O, you looked like you had a great run, and were smiling as always! Great to hear you're getting back to where you want to be. And you were a lovely calming presence as we all started to get anxious as the start was delayed. Thanks!

I'd back you up on saying it was very stressful for the organisers / timers when the start was delayed -- we could see heads craning from that VIP / photographer box at the start and messages were being passed across that they were re-booting etc! I'd say that's why they chose 'Under Pressure' as the start line song :).

That was a tough run in the heat, but I enjoyed it. I was taken very much by surprise by the start (none of that 'watch for the flag dropping, ladies,' starting ceremony we had last year!) and all my clubmates I'd been standing with hared away from me, but I got up to my own pace then and passed a few people and found a nice position, and then caught up with and passed two clubmates on Nutley Lane. I found the drag there ok, and I tried to dig in up to the turnaround and be inspired by the elites coming down the other side. Tried to pick up the pace coming downhill, and at around 8k noticed I was gaining on one of my clubmates. Was finding it very hot, but seeing my dad's friend (from Clonliffe Harriers) at about 7k and my husband at the bus garage kept me going, then it was just a few little drags, Leeson Street and then over the bridge and push to the finish. Obviously I was spurred on by the thought of the nice VHI relaxation area, as my last mile was my fastest.

Finished somewhere in the 50s, 42.40 (7 secs slower than PB), so was delighted!

Hung around for ages after, getting our photos taken on the podiums, using those ice packs etc. then met my husband and went to the relaxation area. Lying on one of those giant cushions with my free lemonade listening to 'Rains Down In Africa' was a great reward :).

Thanks to DSD for the organisation, VHI for all the facilities at the end, and to all the marshalls, volunteers and spectators, and well run everyone!!

Don't worry at all, it was impossible to hear us with the music and yes, you were very much in the zone with that look I've seen on many occasions! Well done again :). I can't believe you missed the firemen though :D

I think they must not have been there -- I saw a photo of them in the paper and the whole road was wet from the hoses, I couldn't have been so in the zone that I missed that?

Sorry, multiple posts! I'm obviously over-excited about the WMM. Does anyone know where those podium photos can be found? Got on the podium with clubmates and would love to see how red and addled we looked after it!
