Ever Known Anyone in a Mind Control Cult?

One of my ex workmates joined a sect in Dublin called the The Palmerians which are like a Middle Ages version of the Catholic church and one of my cousins became a Scientologist.

While I guess all religion is a cult in some form, there is definitely something about a real cults compared to a religion and how it affects the members.

Both of these people developed a kind of personality vacuum and their eyes became devoid of a certain vitality which they had before joining. It was like they were removed and replaced with someone else. They lost contact with all their former social and family networks. The Palmerian one ended up living in doors making no contact with anyone other than other cult members.

I see people making fun of cults, but when you see how a real cult affects people you know, it brings home how sinister these groups are and can lead to mass suicides and murders. It's not good.

I knew two people who got involved in scientology many years ago - both had complete changes of personality and I would agree totally about the eyes - totally devoid of any spark whatsoever. Very scary.
I also agree that the likes of facebook/google would require a kind of cult like devotion from their staff :D

I once had to talk down an ex-gf's cousin from donating her trust fund millions to the Jesus Army. That was a long, long night.
