Have you ever been asked to put a deposit down on a new car when ordering? If so how much/how early did you have to do it?

I've haven't been asked, and most people seem to say don't put a single red cent down until you actually (or nearly) have the product in your hands, which I agree with for the most part.

But I've heard some dealers actively ask for a deposit. Any stories?

If you're ordering brand new car that the dealer has to submit an order for, you will absolutely have to put down a deposit before it goes into production. Otherwise, the dealer is left holding the bad with a bespoke car that he has to shift should you back out of the deal. The deposit makes your intentions clear that you are serious about the deal.

Nothing less than 500 quid I'd reckon.

If its something new from existing stock he has on hand, you might have some wiggle room

Use a credit card to avoid risk if you think company will go bust.

Usually 500 quid, more if it's a very bespoke order.

If it's a factory order with optional extras then definitely you would be required to place a deposit. Otherwise the dealer could be stuck with trying to sell a car with options that someone else may not want.

Asking for a deposit tends to weed out the window shoppers from the serious customers too I'd imagine.

Paid a grand for a factory order with extras last year. It's par for the course.

Paid 500 euro recently. Another garage wanted me to pay a deposit + price of all options which can be a serious figure

Not necessarily correct certainly in my experience.

Certainly if it's a high end factory order car with a few choice options selected, you'll generally be expected to cough up a deposit. How much depends on the dealer, your relationship with them, the car in question, etc. It could be anything from 500 quid to 5k...

Don't you buy from the same dealer every time though? That could be a factor in your experience.

I bought a new car for cash deal over the phone a few years ago brought up a cheque no deposit car was registered ready to go when I went to pick it up.

Any other cars I've bought always minimum 500euro deposit.
