Hi ladies! Many of you taking part in the mini marathon in Dublin this year?

I would post in the Athletics forum but as soon as "mini-marathon" is mentioned it just seems to descend into the offense of using of the word "marathon".

Anyway - just wondering if there are many doing it here and how you are all set? I'm in the fast joggers section this year which I worked really hard last year to place in it! Hoping there won't be too many walkers starting out in this section as last year when I started in joggers I spent the first km dodging groups of walkers.

I'm not really looking forward to it if I'm honest! Maybe it's just nerves as the day is so close but I went out yesterday morning for my last long run and the heat was a killer! Legs were so heavy to lift, I kept wanting to take walking breaks.

Not doing it this year, but I've done it 7 times, first 5 as a walker in my teens and ran 2 in my 20s. It's a very fast course but the crowds kill it, not worth doing unless you can get at least a sub-60 number and even then you're dealing with the walkers who hopped in at Holles Street to "beat the crowds" and random dipping under the tape at the Belfield flyover.

Not doing it either as I can't run and I already do enough charity events on the bike so people are sick of the sight of me begging for money :pac:

I'm doing a triathlon on Saturday though and really struggled with the heat on my run the other evening. Dreading it mid day now!!

In terms of the heat - hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Not just water - take on something with electrolytes, either tablets or coconut water.

Random question. When you say you placed, what does that mean?

My god the people who dip under the tape on the stillorgan road! The first year or two I did the MM (in the walking section) quite a few people used to duck through there. Then one year I seen a couple of people dip under the tape and some people around boo'ed them! Last year was my first year out of the walking section and I didn't notice anyone duck under the tape.

What I mean by I placed in fast joggers was that I really pushed at last year's run and got a fast enough time to move from joggers to fast joggers. I know I won't make runners next year (less than 60 mins).

I'm trying to make myself drink plenty of water but I'm finding it difficult to get it into me, I know I should be drinking it but I'm not in the humour, then when it gets to evening time, I'm parched, drinking loads of water then and then up during the night! Would dioralyte in water be ok to take on the day?

It's just to replenish electrolytes because it's not just water that you lose when you sweat. Dioralyte should be grand. I use high5 tablets the day before an event just to make sure I'm not starting on a deficit.

I'm doing it this year for my 9th time. Last year was the first time I qualified as a runner and the difference in starting off was amazing. Even in the fast joggers there are loads of people who are in there who walk. They aren't that strict about who starts in what pen and you also have a lot of people taking numbers from firends who can't do it etc. The fast joggers is better than the joggers but still a lot of walker dodging.

Remember it doesnt need to be the mini marathon you get your qualifying time from - if you can do a less busy/crowded timed 10km between now and next year and push for the sub 60 minute you can qualify as a runner for next year. You def lose a good few minutes in the jogger/fast jogger section.

Im doing it this year, i qualified for the fast joggers. I haven't had a chance to train as much as i did when i qualified. Be more like a slow jogger. But will see how it goes. Im hoping to keep it under 75 so i can qualify again next year for fast joggers.
