Hi I'm looking at a Volkswagen bora for a first car it'll be a 1.4 as I'm a first time driver and only 17 which means my insurance will be mad! I Tryed 1.9 tdi which was 100bhp and got a ridiculous quote I also live in west cork! I know it won't be a rocket but I want to get as close to my home car scene which is a layed back agri spec scene! I really just want this car as its a Volkswagen and comfort is key! Any advice?

I would recommend a japanese petrol over one of these, my 1st car was a 1.4 Octavia and while moderately comfortable they are unbelievably slow and towards the end of their lives around 120-150k miles they start to use quite abit of oil.

Corolla or 323 wouldn't go down well with the lads though.

I'm still only after turning 17 I have the money alright but I don't want to go wasting it on my first car on insurance and tax when I might just buy a bora and do her up well

Not much doing up to be done with a 74bhp engine with even less torque, my advice would be buy a whatever is cheapest for the first years no claims bonus for a decent drop and then try and get a tdi

Avoid the 1.4 VW petrol engines they are absolute sh1te.

I know the boras were the real goats toe with the boys when modified, but they haven't aged that well and look fair dated now. Lads are tending to move onto fresher stuff, the bora craze isn't what it used to be. They're not all what they're made out to be. Don't tie yourself down to one.

Ach but when its a first car that amount of power can feel alright. Most of us started out with less!

Get yourself a Corolla, 2002-2006 or so. Much better 1.4 engine and they've aged better then the Bora.

If it HAS to be a Bora, go for a 1.6. Insurance shouldn't be a big difference and the 1.4 is pure dirt. Glacial movement would be faster. The 1.6 isn't quick by any means but its noticeable and a good example is a decent smooth driver.

Those Bora's tend to be rougher then badgers arses though so i'd look elsewhere.

    1.4l and 17 y.o.

Not a good combo in the eyes of the insurers.

Stick with 1 litre and build up NCB.
