Moisturiser? (Maturity)

Ok, I could have asked this in the Beauty forum, but...it's all about youngwans over there. At least, as far as skincare is concerned.

I'm fussy about moisturiser, have used it twice a day since I was 18 - and that is a long, long time ago. And, confessing, I have good skin and have tried to conserve this as one of my small vanities. Also, a matter of comfort.

Nowadays, whatever I buy, my skin feels either slick and greasy, or else papery and dry, too soon after.

I've tried most of the cheap-to-medium brands. On the occasions when I've spent more than 25 euro for a pot of face cream, results were no better and sometimes worse.

I am seriously asking, what do my fellow-fusspots find best as a facial moisturiser?

    It needs to
    Be easy to apply
    Feel good
    Look good
and hardest of all, to last for a good few hours!

I'm not snobbish about brands, image, or pricing: baby lotion or Clarins, I don't mind, - if it meets my exacting specification!

I was in the same boat as yourself a few years ago. I was paying €20-€25 a pot for Boots No.7 Restore & Renew Day Cream (for Oul'wans) and I was fed up with the expense although I liked the cream. My daughter directed me to Lidl or Aldi, sorry can't remember which one, and told me to try Lacura Restorative Day Cream, costs just a few euro. I liked it much better than the Boots one so I've used it ever since. It's a personal thing kate, it either suits your skin type or it doesn't. That's my suggestion for what it's worth, cheap to try out too.

Hi katemarch, I recognised your user name from another forum. I find SuperValu's own brand Pure + Kind night cream really good. I tried Clarins Rebalancing Lotion, and I broke out in spots, not a great look on a fifty something! The Pure + Kind is only €4, and their body butter is €5, lovely stuff.

I am not into a ladies beauty products but I as told to use a specific moisturiser when I was in hospital and they gave me a tub of it. (Not for my face you understand) The stuff I was given was E45

Howya! Was just casually browsing this forum, saw your post and felt like replying.
Whilst I'm not exactly an Oulwan yet (I'm 28), I've been actively using moisturiser twice a day since I was 12 and aside from the odd breakout on my chin (which I'm told is down to a hormone/endocrine imbalance on my part), I've always had reasonably clear and healthy skin. The brand I've always sworn by is Clinique. My aunt and grandmother introduced it to me when I was teenager and whenever there was a promotion on in the likes of Debenhams, they always gave me the teeny sample bottles of moisturiser that often came with the gift sets given out if you bought two or more products at a time.
I've rarely used anything other than the Clinique Dramtically Different moisturising cream and I can't recommend it enough.
My face-particularly my chin and T-zone- are prone to being a little dry and sensitive but this stuff has no allergens, perfumes or any nasties in it so it's very gentle. My granmother swears by the pump-action bottle but at €40+, it's a little too expensive for my budget. That being said, I recently picked up a tub of it in Boots for €30- slightly smaller packaging but if you find it awkward getting the stuff out of the pump bottle when it runs low, the tub is the better option. One tub will generally last me on average about 12 months if I use it morning and night.
The formula is not greasy or oily- you don't need much as it spreads very well and soaks into the skin in an instant.
Alternatively, Clinique's Moisture Surge is also excellent. My aunt gave me a wee sample pot of it not too long ago and it's just as good for keeping your skin plump and hydrated throughout the day.

Or, if don't want anything too posh, Lush do some great organic lotions to cater to all skin types. I sometimes use Skin Shanghri La when I can't afford to splash out on Clinique and I find it just as good. It also smells gorgeous!

Lastly, Vaseline do an excellent spray on moisturiser which is an absolute godsend for itchy, flaky, overtly sensitive skin. It makes applying it dead simple, particularly on tricky spots like the back of the legs. I have psorisis on my legs and since I started using this one, it's really helped clear it up in a big way. I also find it great for keeping my tattoos soft and supple.

    Hope this helps! :D

I use moisturiser occasionally - could be anything from Oil of Olay to E45 depending on what comes to hand. Often Nivea (at the moment I occasionally use Nivea for Men, it was handy in the supermarket).

In spite of a lifelong disregard for skin care, I have very smooth skin and pretty much no wrinkles and I will be 70 next. Its a bit wasted on me as my features are arranged a bit haphazardly and with ill considered sizing. Still, its nice to be smooth of skin! My mum was the same. The point being that while skin does sometimes need moisturiser, it doesn't much matter what sort it is and its down to luck and genetics how often you need to use it.

The SuperValu own brand seems to have vanished off the shelves in my local store, I must make enquiries. In the meantime, back to Nivea, though it's dearer. I've seen Aldi's Lacura brand mentioned, could be worth a try.

A lot of years ago when I was laying blocks and plastering for a living the skin on my hands used to crack and get sore very easily, I hated using gloves, that's how I started using moisturizer first, Vaseline and Nivea, never much liked them but they did the job, the Nivea one always stung when I put it on. Now I use E45 and Clarins out of choice, I find both do the job.

None of the cosmetic companies have ever thought of using a plasterer for their adverts - that's great recommendation indeed Uncle Tom! I'd definitely buy cream used by builders! I wouldn't be that impressed with dem gorgeous model youngwans in the adverts! :D
