Self Employed income and Jobseekers Allowance

    Hi,

Hoping someone has some knowledge of this.

My partner is self employed and is on BTWEA which will soon end. He wants to continue with the business. We currently get JA and Qualified Adult (about €237.10) as we are in the second year of BTWEA. My question is if I wanted to sign on in my own right what would my payment be now and when BTWEA ends?

We have the supports and information for the self employed booklet. From what this says (calculating gross income less allowable expenses (not including rent of premises)) his income for SE would be €292.13.

As that is possibly our assessed income can I sign on and get topped up? I'm having problems finding a job and short of moving elsewhere (which we cant because of the business) signing on is my option right now.

    Thanks.

You have two options...when your partner comes off BTWEA he can apply for jobseekers allowance and have means from self employment assessed against his claim with you as an adult dependant or you can make a jobseekers claim with him as an adult dependant and means from his self employment will be assessed against your claim.

If you wanted to sign on now before his btwea allowance finishes then means from his self employment will be assessed against your claim and there will also be a limitation on your claim until his BTWEA finished.

    Hi Eastbono,

Thanks for the info. Do you know how they calculate his means at all? and when you say limitation , what is the limitation?

    Thanks

They will calculate his means from his accounts from last year less reasonable expenses or will project earnings for 2016. A limitation means that as a unit you will only receive €312.80 between you.

Do you know what reasonable expenses are? Would that include rent at all?
We already made a calculation of income less running costs (electricity, supplies etc) but did not include the interest on his bank loan, rent of premises or depreciation of capital items. That came to €292. I know depreciation is included but the bank load and rent of premises. Do you know?

Thanks for your help with this.
