Did they see me coming

I'm not looking for a quote or anything, the job has already been done. It's just that every time I get a job done, no matter how careful I think I am (and in fairness, sometimes I'm not as careful as I should be), I always feel I was ripped off. I think this is because I have no idea of the price of things.

I had a crowd of guys around. They have been doing some work in the estate and they seemed good. In fairness the job they did looks great to me and they had me up on the ladder throughout the day to show me what they were doing.

We used to have a bit of bird infestation under the front portion of the roof of the house. Although I think the birds themselves were long gone, they left quite a mess and a lot of the lats were rotten!

Three guys worked on this job for a bit more than half a day. They removed the tiles in a area about 4 meters by 1.5 meters meters). They removed all the rotten felt and lats. They also took out a good bit of nest material and debris (note: just to be sure you understand, there were no birds, eggs or anything like that).

They then replaced the felt with new stuff, nailed in new lats and replaced the tiles. They also re-cemented around the area and sealed it up.

As I said, I don't want a quote: Just a rough idea of what you'd expect to pay: Would it be a couple of hundred, nearer a grand, a couple of grand or what?

    Thanks

€200-€300 cheap. €400-€500 about right. €600-€700 or more quiet expensive.
    In my opinion.

It would depend a lot if this was a professional outfit or not, properly registered and insured, your fairly spot on for labour only + materials

    3 guys x 5 hrs @ approx 40/hr = 600 min

What part of the country are you in OP?

It's always slightly more in the Dublin hinterland.

I'm in Dublin. They seemed to me to be fairly professional crowd. They do a lot of work for a landlord who owns some houses here that are rented to local hospitals to house families who stay here on short term basis.

I guess I might have overpaid. They wanted €850 and I gave them €780 (and a large bottle of Tesco fizzy water).

Op, your thread reminds me of this.

If it had have taken these guys two days to do the job and charged you the same money you'd be delighted....

    It's very true! :)

To be honest, the job badly needed to be done and they seemed very professional. They kept bringing me out to show me what they were doing and explained how they were doing it. Really nice bunch. I think they are not a big company (just a lone trader or maybe a partnership with a few working for him/them). I'm just so clueless about prices, I always second guess myself. So was wondering.

In Dublin you pay a premium unfortunately, but the figures I gave would be the basic for a working week wage.

Realistically 3 Lads working for anything less than 40 an hour, all costs considered, would be hard pressed make any money at all.

I agree with syd. If you had asked me to throw a guess on the job I would have said 700ish and I would have expected one lad to do it over a couple/few days.

I think it just seems a lot because they were finished so quickly. Considering you were in Dublin I don't think you did too badly. Yes you might have got it cheaper but value the time you would have spent getting quotes, chasing lads, phone calls, etc and the saving would be eaten away!

You were ripped off sucker, I would have done it for €500. But for that price, I'd expect you to hold the ladder for the three days.

Look at it this way. It would be a lot more if they had to go putting up scaffolding so that way think of it as a good deal.

    Sounds about right to me.

A quote I often refer to: If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur. Red Adair

Got to love the mindset of the OP!!! I get it all the time. Some people think that because they get 350 take home a week then we should to even thou we are skilled, pay van insurance, public liability, tax, tools, diesel and so on. Just because your cousin down the pub might charge 80 a day doesn't mean we all have to work for it. Your quote for that work was reasonable and shame on you for even questioning it! If they did a good job, then money well spent so now you can go put your biscut tin away, you got a good deal!!

I know nothing about building, so see no shame in asking a simple and reasonable question. People do it all the time here. After all, this is a discussion forum.

I never said or alluded to any of the things you mentioned above. What's more, I do run my own business, so understand how business and expenses work.

Seems like you're sensitive to any questioning. Shame on you! :p

That's a very silly post, there's no shame by the op wanting to question something.
