Suitable car for 3 kids with good MPG?

Just wondering about peoples' experiences with cars suitable for 3 kids. So 3 child-seats.... not so simple. and something that can be used for regular driving of 2,500km + a month without requiring one own an oil well and refinery?

Is it necessary to get a gas-guzzling APC? :)

I guess budget demands I seek a car that's 5 years old at least, and I'm always hesitant about old diesels...

My recent experiences with salon type cars (none of which would suffice) have been ...

1.8 VW Passat (petrol)... a pleasure to drive, very responsive but a bit thirsty.
a 1.8 Skoda Octavia (diesel) nice car, kind of reverse of the passat with hair-trigger breaks and sluggish acceleration. Could go to the moon and back on a tank of diesel.
1.6 Nissan Primera (petrol) feckin horrible car... too heavy for its engine, need to drop down to 2nd to overtake, and it struggles. Electrics are a joke, window went, horn went, feckin airbag system too thsnks to wires in drivers seat being just left hanging from their solder connections. ( I believe Nissan outsourced to Renault and the cheapest crap electrics were used.) and for its 1.6 engine, not too efficient at all. (I'd be most hesitant to go with Nissan again)

Parts, and their availability / cost, of course, are another concern.

    Does anyone know a winner?
. spacious enough for 3 child seats
. efficient enough to use regularly
. good on parts availability and cost
